Summary: The Waterfront Director will support the camp's leadership team, including the Camp Directors, Assistant Director, Unit Leaders, and Activities Director. This position will also play a crucial role for all aquatic activities as outlined in the Camp Nejeda Aquatic Program Manual.
Reports to: Certified Pool Operator (CPO), Maintenance Director, and Camp Directors
Camp Nejeda: Camp Nejeda is a unique summer camp in New Jersey dedicated to serving families with type 1 diabetes. Since 1958, it has provided a safe, supportive, and fun environment where campers can enjoy traditional camp activities while learning to manage their diabetes alongside peers who understand their challenges. Camp Nejeda’s mission is to empower people with type 1 diabetes to develop confidence, independence, and friendships that last a lifetime.
Essential Job Functions:
1. Plan, Organize, and Implement Waterfront Activities: Develop and execute a comprehensive waterfront program encompassing swimming, boating, fishing, and other water-based activities. Ensure the program caters to diverse age groups and skill levels, promoting inclusivity and camper engagement.
2. Supervise Waterfront Staff: Provide ongoing supervision, mentorship, and evaluation for a team of lifeguards to ensure staff competence and adherence to safety protocols.
3. Implement and Enforce Safety Policies and Procedures: Establish and enforce rigorous safety protocols in accordance with ACA and Department of Health regulations. Conduct regular safety checks of equipment, facilities, and waterfront areas to maintain a secure and risk-free environment.
4. Respond to Emergencies: Execute established emergency procedures in a calm and efficient manner, demonstrating leadership in situations such as water-related accidents, missing swimmers, and severe weather events.
5. Maintain Waterfront Facilities and Equipment: Ensure the cleanliness, safety, and proper maintenance of all waterfront facilities and equipment, including the pool, lake, boats, docks, and safety gear. Coordinate with the Maintenance Director to address any repairs or maintenance needs promptly.
6. Collaborate with Camp Leadership: Work closely with the Camp Directors, Unit Leaders, and Activities Director to integrate waterfront activities seamlessly into the overall camp program.
7. Uphold the Mission of Camp Nejeda Foundation: Demonstrate a genuine commitment to the mission of Camp Nejeda Foundation, actively contributing to the overall success of the camp in providing a positive and enriching experience for campers and staff.
Qualifications:
- College degree preferred, or equivalent experience.
- Must be able to reside on camp property from June 18 - August 15, with the exception of designated days off.
- Able to work collaboratively with a diverse staff and contribute to an inclusive work environment while fostering a sense of belonging in all staff and campers.
- Certifications: Current lifeguarding, CPR, and First Aid from the American Red Cross or an organization having equivalent and accepted standards.
- Camp Experience: At least one year’s work experience at a camp waterfront.
- Specialized Experience: Familiarity with pool maintenance, including testing, treating, and cleaning the water.
- Supervisory Skills: Strong leadership and management skills, including providing clear guidance, constructive feedback, and ongoing support to foster a positive and productive work environment.
- Familiarity with diabetes management is preferred. (Training provided)
Other Responsibilities:
- Help to develop and facilitate training content for the waterfront staff during Staff Training Week, including safety protocols, emergency procedures, and activity instruction.
- Review Camp Nejeda Aquatic Program Manual, ACA & NJ DOH regulations.
- Conduct daily pool water tests, maintain pool log.
- Report pool problems to CPO, Maintenance, or Camp Director.
- Perform skill verification for Aquatic Staff.
- Schedule lifeguard and support staff for all aquatic activities.
- Evaluate aquatic staff performance and provide coaching.
- Train assistant for each session.
- Test campers' swimming ability on opening day.
- Supervise lifeguard duties during aquatic area use.
- Conduct lost swimmer drills.
- Coordinate weekly pool samples with camp administrators.
- Organize early morning polar bear swims.
- Create enthusiasm for all aquatic activities.
- Plan alternate activities if pool is inoperable.
- Conduct regular buddy checks.
- Work with Camp Directors on aquatic trips.
- Facilitate medical staff swims, staff swims, and pool parties.
- All other duties as assigned.
