About The Camp
Camp O-AT-KA, founded in 1906 on the shore of Lake Sebago in Maine and operated continually since then, is a traditional summer residential camp for boys ages 8-16. We seek to develop skills, instill confidence, and build character in a supportive family environment. We welcome campers and staff from a wide variety of backgrounds, and O-AT-KA seeks to bring them together by furthering common interests, promoting a sense of community, achieving progress towards goals, and fostering the development of lifelong friendships.
Camp O-AT-KA offers 30 activities in athletics, arts, boating, theater, nature, outdoor skills, swimming, etc. and sessions for the campers run from two to seven weeks. The campus is in the town of Sebago and directly on Sebago Lake. The camp is set up in 3 units, dependent on age, and we feed approximately 150-170 people at each meal.
About the Position
Camp O-AT-KA is seeking a qualified, passionate, and inspirational Sous Chef. The Chef’s primary responsibility is to take excellent care of our campers and staff by providing quality food service.
You will work with the Head Chef to oversee all kitchen operations while working with staff to provide delicious, wholesome, child-friendly meals for campers and staff. This position offers the opportunity to be part of a team while preparing quality meals in a positive, friendly environment.
The camp season runs from June 15 to August 8. This position includes a competitive salary, room and board, and the opportunity to spend the summer in a beautiful lakeside setting. We also offer free tuition for staff children.
Primary responsibilities
● Along with the head chef, create and maintain a positive and professional atmosphere with a sense of mutual respect, both in the kitchen and throughout the camp.
● Prepare meals for approx. 150 people with a variety of options for vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free restrictions.
● Maintain superior food quality and sanitation standards in accordance with State and American Camp Association guidelines and regulations.
● Serve as as a leader in the kitchen to manage and motivate a kitchen staff, and serve as the head of operations when the head chef has days off.
● Assist in ordering all food and supplies while meeting set budgets for each.
● Ensure proper receiving and storage of all food and supplies.
● Communicate and work with the Executive Director and Wedding Coordinator regarding special events and general feedback on the kitchen operation.
● Ensure proper food handling and food safety practices.
● Maintain a high standard of cleanliness throughout the kitchen and storage areas.
Basic position requirements
● Excellent cultural fit for the camp, passion for our mission and delivering it through food and food service
● 3 or more years cooking experience and/or experience in a catering environment
● Experience working with purchasing food and supplies a plus
● Experienced in food sanitation and safety—ServSafe certified a plus
