Job Title: Camp Director
Location: Hybrid/Camp Spencer, Harford County

Hourly Rate: $27-$30/hour outside of residential camp weeks
Residential Camp Week Pay: Up to $1,500/week during residential camp weeks
Remote Hours Start: April (a few hours weekly leading up to camp)
On-Site Requirement: Required each residential camp week (two weeks for 2025)
About Us:
Camp Opportunity is a child welfare organization based in Maryland with a mission to provide an overnight summer camp experience for children who have been abused and/or neglected. Since our inception, we’ve positively impacted over 1,000 children ages 8-11. Our one-to-one counselor-to-camper ratio fosters transformative relationships that continue well beyond the camp season. Ultimately, our mission is to break the cycle of abuse and neglect.
Position Overview:
The Camp Director will play a pivotal role in the success of Camp Opportunity by overseeing the planning and execution of our summer camp program. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, this role is responsible for managing all aspects of the camp, including program implementation, staff supervision, and ensuring a safe, engaging, and mission-driven environment for campers. The Camp Director will work collaboratively with the Camper Care Specialist and Coordinators to maintain high standards of camper care and program delivery. This part-time role begins remotely in April with a few hours per week and transitions to an on-site leadership position during each residential camp week.
Key Responsibilities:
- Camp Program Management: Develop, implement, and oversee camp programming, ensuring activities meet camper needs and align with the mission of Camp Opportunity.
- Staff Supervision: Provide guidance and support to the Assistant Directors, Camper Care Specialist, and other staff to ensure smooth execution of their roles throughout the camp season.
- Communication: Maintain consistent communication with staff, the Executive Director, caregivers, and all camp stakeholders.
- Camp Operations: Oversee logistical operations such as scheduling, camper registrations, and staffing, ensuring all paperwork and camper records are properly maintained.
- Safety and Compliance: Ensure that all camp activities comply with safety regulations and industry standards. Implement and monitor safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Program Evaluation: Gather and analyze feedback from campers, staff, and caregivers to continuously improve camp programs and processes.
- Budget Assistance: Work with the Executive Director to monitor and assist with camp-related budgeting, cost control, and financial tracking.
- On-Site Leadership: Provide hands-on leadership during camp weeks, addressing camper and staff needs and ensuring the camp environment supports the mission and camper care goals.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., Education, Recreation, Social Work) is preferred but not required.
- Previous experience in camp management, child welfare, or a similar role.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Passion for working with children and a commitment to promoting their personal growth and well-being.
- Ability to work well in a team and to provide guidance and mentorship to others.
Technical Skills:
- Data Management: Ability to manage and track camper data using camp management software and spreadsheets.
- Digital Communication: Proficiency with communication tools like email and video conferencing to maintain relationships with stakeholders.
- Google Suite: Comfortable using Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Forms) for managing tasks, budgets, and team collaboration.
- Camp Management Software: Willingness to learn and utilize camp management software to track camper information, schedules, and staff assignments.
- Adaptability: Comfortable learning and using new technologies to streamline camp operations.
