Job Title: Head Camp Nurse

Description: Registered Nurse (RN) for a week-long residential youth camp for children who have experienced abuse and neglect. The Nurse has specific relationships with campers, staff, parents/guardians of campers and staff, primary care providers, and psychiatrists to provide the best care possible for the week and to communicate information regarding medical needs. This role will have two or three additional direct reports supporting the med staff. There are two weeks of camp scheduled for 2025.

Weekly Rate: $700-$900

Job Summary:

Camp Opportunity nurses are responsible for:

  • Staying on-site during Camp Week, location in Harford County, Maryland.
  • Sign off and implement the Camp Health Program authorized by Maryland Youth Camp Certification.
  • The care and supervision of all medical services. This care includes looking after ill or injured campers or staff and administering medication.
  • Communication with parents and counselors.
  • Organization of medical information, medications, and first-aid kits, as well as keeping records of camper visits.
  • Camp will be staffed 24 hours a day from the check-in time.

Qualifications:

  • Registered nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) with a valid Maryland license; Individual professional insurance is requested.
  • CPR and First Aid certified.
  • Current Driver’s license.
  • Experience working with children and adults.
  • Desire to work with children and adults in a camp setting.
  • Must enjoy working outdoors, and have a positive attitude.
  • Great written and verbal communication skills.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Provide healthcare to meet the individual needs of camp campers, staff, and volunteers.
  • Collaborate with other medical staff to meet medical needs.
  • Follow Maryland Youth Camp Certifications’ authorized Health Care Plan and Standing Orders approved by On-Call Physicians. These must be updated, reviewed, and approved annually, and comply with Maryland Youth Camp Certifications’ Healthcare Policies and Procedures.
  • Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers, staff, and volunteers.
  • Assist in organizing and setting up Health Lodge for summer camp.
  • Inventory and order all necessary medical supplies and equipment following approved Standing Orders.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records in the camper file.
  • Ensure camper health examinations, and medications are current and in the camper file.
  • Prepare and utilize daily medical logs for treatment and medication.
  • Prepare and record insurance and accident report forms.
  • Oversee First Aid procedures and supplies.
  • Prepare and distribute first aid kits throughout camp including; Camp Nurse rescue bag, camp buildings, kitchen, office, camper dorms, staff packs, and activity areas.
  • Ensure supplies are well stocked and distributed as needed.
  • Screen all campers who are arriving and departing camp.
  • Verify health history and examination.
  • Verify emergency authorization.
  • Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable diseases.
  • Conduct a health assessment.
  • Keep all medications for campers and staff under his/her control at all times during dissemination and locked in health lodge at all other times.
  • Assist in creating and implementing best practices for our program regarding state regulations.
  • Maintain record system within CampDoc software.
  • Observe and assess the sanitation and safety conditions of the camp.
  • Ability to communicate with parents, staff, and administration about camper health concerns.
  • Be responsible for contacting parents concerning the status of their camper’s health by telephone in the following situations: any injury requiring an x-ray, illness requiring an infirmary stay and emergency treatment/accident, etc.
  • Be knowledgeable of outside health resources.
  • Contact Children’s Physicians to obtain documentation needed and to coordinate care.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Terms:

The Camp Nurse must be willing to stay on the premises during both weeks of camp. This position will receive free room and board and a weekly stipend to be decided before Camp week.
