About Camp Runoia:
Our sleepaway summer camp has been providing profound camp experiences for girls ages 7-16 since 1907. Camp Runoia programs include horseback riding, sailing, waterskiing, swimming, arts and crafts, climbing and challenge course, field sports, target sports, and more. In addition, our exciting wilderness trip program has girls traveling throughout the state of Maine for overnight hiking and canoeing trips. Position Summary:
Camp Runoia is seeking enthusiastic and dedicated General Cabin Counselors with Waterfront Responsibilities for the summer of 2025. As a Cabin Counselor, you will play a crucial role in creating a safe, fun, and inclusive environment for campers. You will guide and support a cabin of campers in their daily activities, fostering a sense of community and encouraging personal growth. Additionally, you will be responsible for instructing and supervising campers in various waterfront activities, ensuring their safety and enjoyment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Cabin Management:
- Live in a cabin with campers, creating a supportive and engaging atmosphere.
- Encourage teamwork, respect, and cooperation among cabin members.
- Provide a safe and nurturing environment for campers, ensuring their well-being at all times.
- Actively monitor camper behavior and promote positive interactions.
- Activity Leadership:
- Facilitate and participate in a variety of camp activities, including arts and crafts, sports, swimming, hiking, and evening programs.
- Lead and supervise waterfront activities, including swimming, kayaking, canoeing, and waterskiing.
- Instruct campers in proper swimming techniques and water safety.
- Ensure the safe operation and maintenance of waterfront equipment.
- Supervise campers in and around the water at all times, enforcing safety rules and regulations.
- Mentorship:
- Serve as a role model and mentor to campers, providing guidance and support in their personal and social development.
- Foster independence while ensuring campers feel valued and heard.
- Communication:
- Maintain open communication with campers, parents, and fellow staff members.
- Address any concerns or conflicts promptly and effectively.
- Camp Spirit:
- Promote camp values and traditions, encouraging a sense of belonging and community among campers and staff.
Qualifications:
- Age: Must be at least 18 years old by the start of the camp season.
- Experience:
- Previous experience working with children in a camp or educational setting is preferred, but not required.
- Prior experience with waterfront activities, including swimming instruction and supervision, is highly preferred.
- A positive attitude and a passion for working with youth are essential.
- Skills:
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Strong swimming skills and the ability to teach basic swimming techniques.
- Ability to rescue and perform basic first aid and CPR in the water.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy equipment (e.g., canoes, kayaks).
- Basic first aid and CPR certification is a plus.
- Character:
- Must demonstrate responsibility, patience, creativity, and enthusiasm.
- Ability to adapt to different situations and manage various camper needs.
