What are the responsibilities and job description for the Major Gifts Officer position at Camp Sunshine at Sebago Lake, Inc.?
The Major Gifts Officer (MGO) reports to the VP of Development and is responsible for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting high-net-worth individuals as well as corporate support to secure significant donations for Camp Sunshine. The MGO will focus on building strong relationships with potential major donors and strategically managing a portfolio of prospects to achieve substantial fundraising goals through personalized engagement and solicitation strategies. The MGO will conduct face-to-face meetings locally as well as nationally and will develop tailored cultivation and solicitation plans to secure major and principal gifts.
Key responsibilities
· Prospect identification and qualification:
Camp Sunshine has extensive donor support and will provide the MGO with a robust starting portfolio of Individuals and Business Partners. In addition, the MGO will actively identify potential major donors through various channels including networking, prospect research, and existing donor databases to continue to build a qualified prospect pipeline.
· Relationship building:
Cultivate meaningful relationships with prospective donors through personalized communication, in-person meetings, and tailored engagement strategies to understand their philanthropic interests and motivations.
· Donor cultivation:
Develop and execute comprehensive cultivation plans to educate donors about Camp Sunshine’s mission, programs, and impact, including site visits, presentations, and donor events.
· Strategic Corporate partnerships:
Lead efforts to acquire and manage corporate partnerships to support our mission and strategic initiative. Work with the President and CEO, VP of Development, Director of CFR and AVP of Communications and Strategic Events to build the Business Partners Program (gifts of $2500 ).
· Solicitation:
Prepare and execute effective solicitation strategies to ask for significant donations, including crafting meaningful proposals and presenting a compelling case for support.
· Stewardship:
Maintain ongoing communication with donors’ post-gift, providing updates on how their contributions are being utilized and expressing sincere gratitude through personalized stewardship plans.
· Portfolio management:
Manage a portfolio of 100 major donor prospects, prioritizing outreach and engagement based on potential giving capacity and philanthropic interests.
· Collaboration with stakeholders:
Work closely with other development team members, board members, program staff, and leadership to align fundraising efforts and ensure donor engagement across the organization.
Required skills and qualifications
· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build rapport with high-net-worth individuals and strategic business partners.
· Strong understanding of fundraising principles, including prospect research, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
· Minimum of 5 years of experience with major gift fundraising. Proven track record of successfully closing major and principal gifts from individuals and corporations. This includes experience with written gift agreements and endowment fund agreements.
· Experience in managing complex donor relationships.
· Ability to tailor communication strategies to individual donor needs.
· Strong presentation and negotiation skills.
· Collaborative work style in managing portfolios with leadership and staff.
· Knowledge of donor databases and CRM systems (Blackbaud is a plus).
· Bachelor’s degree required and Master’s degree a plus.
