What are the responsibilities and job description for the Camp Nurse position at Camp Uncommon?
Camp Uncommon is seeking a Head Nurse at each of our summer camps to manage all aspects of the Camp Health Center. The Head Nurse will report to the Camp Director and will supervise the Health Center Team. The Head Nurse works closely with Nurse Practitioners, Camp Doctors, the Camp Senior Team, the Change Summer CEO, and the Change Summer Operations Team. The Head Nurse and Health Center Team is responsible for ensuring the health, wellness and safety of all campers and team members. We pay a competitive salary and offer many other enticing benefits, such as free room, board, and laundry service. It’s preferable that you already have the in-state RN certification, however, with enough lead time we will help cover the cost of getting a certification in the state where camp runs.
Camp Uncommon serves ~540 campers from Brookly, Boston, Newark and Camden (NJ), and Rochester (grades 4-9) over 3 two-week sessions during the summer. At Camp Uncommon , we believe that an overnight summer camp experience:
Camp Uncommon offers the following program activities for campers:
- Athletics: soccer, flag football, basketball, tennis baseball, kickball, street hockey;
- Waterfront: swim instruction, general swim, sailing, kayaking, canoeing;
- Adventure: nature, overnight camping, climbing, and low ropes;
- Inter-Arts: arts & crafts, pottery, theater, dance, music;
- STEM: rocketry, natural/environmental science;
- Discovery: self-reflection, journaling, team-building; and
- Intensives: improvisation, photography, puppeteering, cooking, chess, spoken word, hiking, wacky sports, African dance, step dance, and yoga.
Key duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Administering camper prescription medications as directed;
- Dispensing over-the-counter medications as appropriate;
- Assessing campers and counselors who are ill or injured and determine if further medical attention is needed;
- Assisting in stabilizing campers and counselors requiring transportation to medical facilities;
- Contacting parents of ill or injured campers and counselors (if appropriate) and updating them as necessary;
- Documenting all injuries and care rendered. This involves documentation of all over-the counter medicines, first aid treatment, and communication with parents, doctors/nurse practitioners or any other off-camp facilities;
- Maintaining inventory of supplies;
- Keeping the Health Center clean and organized; and
- Working directly with all Health Center team members and nurses.
Additional Head Nurse responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Managing and delegating all Health Center administrative duties;
- Supervising and onboarding Health Center nurses and team members; 12. Overseeing general operations of the Health Center;
- Serving as the liaison between the Health Center Team and Senior Team members; 14. Regularly updating and communicating with the Camp Director regarding Health Center operations, camper and team member care, and general camp health concerns; 15. Supporting with pre-camp inventory ordering and management;
- Supporting the Senior Team to update and develop camp health and safety protocols; and
- Assisting with the management and implementation of American Camp Association Standards pertaining to health, wellness, and safety.
Required certifications and experience:
- All necessary credentials and certifications;
- Experience working with and/or desire to work with elementary and middle school students (rising 4-9 graders);
- Ability to communicate effectively with families;
- Dedication to the mission of Change Summer and to social justice;
- Desire to work in an outdoor, camp setting;
- An “all hands” mentality (i.e., willingness to help ensure we provide the best experience for campers);
- A willingness to receive and implement feedback in order to grow and develop;
- A willingness to develop her/his leadership capabilities;
