We provide students from under-resourced communities with an enjoyable, exciting residential summer camp experience that motivates them to approach the future with confidence, curiosity, independence, and responsibility. Camp Uncommon will serve up to 550 campers entering grades 4–9 from Uncommon Charter Schools over 1–3 two-week sessions during the summer.
Job Description
Camp Uncommon is seeking Nurses to help with all aspects of the Camp Uncommon]Health Center. Nurses will report to the Head Nurse and the Director of Camp Uncommon , and work closely with the Health Center Team, nurse practitioners, camp doctors, and Camp Uncommon’s Senior Team. The Nurse is responsible for ensuring the health, wellness and safety of Camp Uncommon campers and team members. We pay a competitive salary and offer many other enticing benefits, such as free room, board, and laundry service. It’s preferable that you already have the in-state RN certification, however, with enough lead time we will help cover the cost of getting a certification in the state where camp runs.
Camp Uncommonserves ~500 campers from Uncommon Charter Schools (grades 4-9) over 2 two-week sessions during the summer. At Camp Uncommon, we believe that an overnight summer camp experience:
- Provides an opportunity for campers to explore, learn, and have fun in a safe, tight-knit community;
- Increases campers’ social, emotional, and non-cognitive skills (e.g., self-confidence, responsibility, independence, and curiosity), which are essential to college and life success;
- Creates an additional pipeline for strong, diverse teacher candidates for [Uncommon Charter Schools)] by providing a space for counselors (potential teachers) to work directly with [Uncommon Charter Schools)] students.
Camp Uncommon offers the following program activities for campers:
- Athletics: soccer, flag football, basketball, tennis baseball, kickball, street hockey;
- Waterfront: swim instruction, general swim, sailing, kayaking, canoeing;
- Adventure: nature, overnight camping, climbing, and low ropes;
- Inter-Arts: arts & crafts, pottery, theater, dance, music;
- STEM: rocketry, natural/environmental science;
- Discovery: self-reflection, journaling, team-building; and
- Intensives: improvisation, photography, puppeteering, cooking, chess, spoken word, hiking, wacky sports, African dance, step dance, and yoga.
Key duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Camp nurses are responsible for the health, wellness, safety, and care of all members of the Camp Uncommon community as well as related administrative duties. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Administering camper prescription medications as directed;
- Dispensing over-the-counter medications as appropriate;
- Assessing campers and counselors who are ill or injured and determine if further medical attention is needed;
- Assisting in stabilizing campers and counselors requiring transportation to medical facilities;
- Contacting parents of ill or injured campers and counselors (if appropriate) and updating them as necessary;
- Documenting all injuries and care rendered. This involves documentation of all over-the counter medicines, first aid treatment, and communication with parents, doctors/nurse practitioners or any other off-camp facilities;
- Maintaining inventory of supplies;
- Keeping the Health Center clean and organized; and
- Working directly with all Health Center team members and nurses.
Qualifications
- All necessary credentials and certifications;
- Experience working with and/or desire to work with elementary and middle school students (grades 4-9);
- Ability to communicate effectively with families;
- Dedication to the mission of Camp Uncommon and to social justice;
- Desire to work in an outdoor, camp setting;
- An “all hands” mentality (i.e., willingness to help ensure we provide the best experience for campers);
- A willingness to receive and implement feedback in order to grow and develop;
- A willingness to develop her/his leadership capabilities;
- An openness to growing her/his confidence and presence;
- A personality and character that exudes flexibility, self-awareness, integrity, curiosity, kindness, and patience;
- Availability to work for the entire camper season (~5 weeks, including, team training).
