Position Overview
The Associate Director for Advocacy provides lobbying and advocacy support for the Global Health Advocacy Incubator’s Overdose Prevention Initiative. The Associate Director assists in the development and implementation of strategy to achieve federal policy changes that expand treatment access and harm reduction to reduce overdose deaths in the United States. The position lobbies Congressional offices and engages with Administration officials on a range of substance use issues. Knowledge of the federal legislative process, as well as substance use and health policy issues is required. This position reports to the Overdose Prevention Initiative Program Director.
This position is located in Washington D.C.
WHAT YOU'LL ACCOMPLISH :
Key areas of focus for the position include :
- Lobby Congressional offices on a range of substance use and overdose prevention issues.
- Analyze legislation and draft policy and advocacy materials, such as correspondence to
- Members of Congress and the Administration, and short position papers on a range of substance use issues.
- Monitor bill introductions, congressional hearings, committee mark-ups, and floor debates.
- Draft talking points, joint stakeholder letters and other materials to be used in advocacy efforts.
- Identify opportunities to influence policy-making and develop advocacy plans to capitalize on those opportunities, such as direct policymaker engagement, media advocacy, recruiting new advocates, etc.
- Represent the Overdose Prevention Initiative at meetings with Federal officials, including congressional and agency staff, and speak on behalf of our organization and our issues.
- Maintain in-depth knowledge of opioids and substance use disorder issues, as well as an understanding of and sensitivity to stigmatizing language.
- Participate in meetings with key partner organizations from across the public health and law enforcement communities.
- Other duties as assigned by the Program Director and Executive Vice President of U.S. Programs.
