Position Summary

The Dean of the Library provides visionary leadership for library services, programs, and resource management in support of student learning, academic programs, and faculty teaching and research. The Dean oversees the operation of the university library, which includes the Curriculum Materials/Media Center and the Teaching Resource Center, and coordinates with the Dean of the School of Osteopathic Medicine in overseeing the operation of the Medical Library. The Dean of the Library leads a team of 12 professional librarians and six staff members with the assistance of an Assistant Dean and three department head librarians.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership in the development and fulfillment of the library’s strategic vision and goals which supports and extends the University Mission.
  • Develops and advocates for library programs that advance student learning and facilitate research and scholarly activities.
  • Leads the continuing effort to create a student-centered library environment that encourages academic excellence.
  • Plans and manages effectively the financial resources of the library to provide access to learning/information resources and services.
  • Works productively with all library constituencies to improve library services and facilities, enhance the quality of resources, and increase operational efficiency.
  • Oversees the library’s assessment efforts to enable data-informed decision making.
  • Provides leadership in the recruitment, mentoring, and retention of a strong, service-oriented library faculty and staff.
  • Represents and advocates for the library within the university and with external communities.
  • Cultivates relationships with external partners to secure funding and support for the library.
  • Maintains a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
  • Upholds and abides by Campbell University policies and procedures, including, but not limited to Title IX, HIPAA, and FERPA guidelines.
  • Other duties, responsibilities, and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice.

Education/Experience

  • Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program required. A doctoral or second master’s degree desirable.
  • Record of success in increasingly responsible positions as a library administrator, with at least three years of upper-level leadership and supervisory experience in an academic library setting.
  • Extensive experience in long-range planning, budgeting, evaluation, and assessment of library services.
  • Active participation in state, regional, and/or national library and professional organizations.
  • Distinguished record of librarianship, scholarship/creative activity, and service.

  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and administrators.
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills: working collegially, excelling in oral and written communication skills, and inspiring confidence and trust.
  • Ability to organize, direct, prioritize, and delegate work appropriately, while maintaining a positive and empowering work culture.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current issues and trends in academic librarianship and higher education.
  • Awareness of trends and practices in teaching and scholarly research, including open access, open educational resources, and scholarly publishing reform.
  • Significant understanding of institutional and programmatic accreditation requirements.
  • Demonstrates tact, a positive attitude, courtesy, and discretion when interacting with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Exercises independent judgment in complex, new, and/or stressful situations.
  • Manages multiple, concurrent projects, and meet deadlines.
  • Flexibility, adaptability, and a willingness to work in a changing environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, with the ability to learn new technologies.
  • This position demands accuracy, honesty, integrity and the ability to work within the Christian mission of Campbell University.
