The duties that the incumbent of the vacancy will be expected to perform. Duties Description Maintenance Assistants perform a variety of semiskilled maintenance, repair, and related activities. Specific duties and job requirements will include, but not be limited to, the following: •Under direct supervision, assists a skilled trade (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, etc.) worker in the maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of canal buildings, facilities and related equipment;•Assists in installation, maintenance and repair of canal equipment;•Assists in repair and replacement of plumbing equipment;•Assists in the painting of boats, walls, ceiling, wood and metal trimmings and ornaments and;•Operates tools and machinery and ensures equipment is in proper working condition.
The minimum qualifications required for this vacancy. Minimum Qualifications Must have two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*.Additional Requirements: Based on operational needs, candidates must possess a Class B driver’s license with no Air Brake restrictions to operate a motor vehicle in NYS at the time of appointment & continuously thereafter or face possible administrative action up to and including termination. Candidates who possess a valid Class B driver’s permit to operate a motor vehicle in NYS at the time of appointment will have up to five months from the date of appointment to obtain their Class B driver’s license with Air Brake Endorsement or face possible administrative action up to and including termination.*Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship.
