What are the responsibilities and job description for the Chemotherapy Treatment Medical Assistant position at Cancer Specialists of North Florida?
Cancer Specialists of North Florida is recruiting for an experienced Chemotherapy Treatment Medical Assistant for our busy Saint Augustine Office. The Chemotherapy Treatment Medical Assistant assist physicians and clinicians with patient care in a medical environment that may include medical oncology, radiation oncology, diagnostic imaging and bone marrow transplant (BMT) in the Treatment Chemotherapy Infusion Room. Maintains efficient patient flow, assist with patient care, procedures and education.
Duties and responsibilities may vary from one clinic location to another. The decision regarding the individual clinic needs will be determined by the Practice Manager/Administrator.
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Follows standard policies and procedures to carry out medical orders
- Assist nurses with flow in the Chemotherapy Treatment Room.
- Work master nurse treatment schedule throughout the day ie: held treatment, no show, patients in the hospital etc.
- Records patient data including but not limited to, vital signs, height, weight, allergies and medication changes
- Removes IV lines from patient
- Monitors IV pumps and pauses if needed
- Assist Oncology Registered Nurse with peripheral lab draws
- Assist the physician with Bone Marrow biopsy (if needed)
- PICC dressing changes
- Performs therapeutic phlebotomy
- Demonstrates competency in triaging patients
- Responsible for establishing home health, Hospice, and home oxygen
- Educates and teaches patients on self-injections
- Responsible to give SQ and IM injections, including but not limited to: B-12, Retacrit, Prolia, Xgeva, Zarxio etc.
- Take verbal orders from MD and APP’s and enter orders into EMR
- Manipulate Care Plans
- Enroll patients in Expain and assist patients with questions
- Update Expain Protocol (day and frequency of notifications) when regimen or schedule changes
- Completes FMLA and Disability paperwork
- Assist the Radiation Oncologist with concurrent patients by keeping up with CT sims, V sims, and RO appointment to coincide with when to start medical oncology treatment courses and coordinate times of visits to Medical Oncologist
- Chart prep
- Run business office reports and ensure all authorization have been obtained.
- Adheres to safety and quality control measures such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration, infection control and sterilization criteria
- All other duties as assigned

Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Certificate of graduation from an accredited program for Medical Assistants preferred
- Previous 3 – 5 years’ experience as a medical assistant or nursing assistant in a hospital or clinic setting.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
- Current BLS certification required
- Certified Medical Assistant Certification preferred
