What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Instrumentation & Controls Design Engineer position at CandidTalent?
Senior Instrumentation & Controls Design Engineer
Mansfield, MA – commutable from Norwood, Providence, Attleboro, Taunton, Brockton, Dedham
$120K–$150K base bonus
Full-time, on-site
This is a professional services firm delivering complex industrial automation projects across control systems, MES, OT/IT integration, and data analytics. They’re structured like a consultancy, not a traditional integrator — which means faster projects, deeper client partnerships, and more autonomy for their engineers.
The culture is defined by engineers who’ve built their careers in automation and haven’t stepped away from the technical work. There’s trust at every level, no micromanagement, and a shared focus on solving real problems.
“You’re surrounded by people who’ve dedicated their lives to this field — and they’re genuinely trying to take things to the next level.”
This isn’t a business weighed down by process or hierarchy. Senior engineers are given space to own their work, lead from the front, and deliver results with minimal oversight. It's an agile, outcomes-driven environment with a strong sense of purpose.
The Role
You’ll join a close-knit, highly technical 10-person team within a larger business. The focus is electrical and instrumentation design — not software or validation.
The scope includes control panel design, layout drawings, instrumentation specs, and interpretation of P&IDs, loop diagrams, schematics, and equipment arrangements. You'll lead full lifecycle project delivery, from quoting through to commissioning, working independently while collaborating across engineering and client teams.
Most projects are DeltaV or Rockwell, typically in GMP-regulated environments. Project sizes range from small cabinet builds to multi-cabinet, high-I/O systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Control panel and electrical design compliant with NFPA and UL 508A
- Creation and interpretation of schematics, P&IDs, loop diagrams, and layout drawings
- Instrumentation specification and selection
- Troubleshooting analog, discrete, and communication signals (HART, Fieldbus, Profibus, etc.)
- Ownership of entire project scope from quote to FAT and site delivery
- Support and mentor junior engineers
- Regional travel up to 25% (including occasional 1–2 week FAT trips)

- 5 years in industrial control panel/electrical design
Strong knowledge of:
- NFPA
- UL 508A
- Low-voltage control systems

- Subject matter expertise in PLC/DCS hardware fundamentals and theory of operation
- Comfortable interpreting P&IDs, loop diagrams, schematics, and layout drawings
- Basic understanding of process control theory
- Electrical Engineering degree strongly preferred
- Able to deliver self-sufficiently across full project lifecycle
Preferred Experience
- PE license (not required)
- Experience in life sciences/GMP environments
- Circuit-level design skills
- Familiarity with DeltaV or Rockwell hardware
Not a Fit If
- Your background is primarily in software development (e.g. Python, C )
- Your experience is QA/validation-heavy or purely chemical engineering
Compensation & Benefits
- Bonus structure
- Additional comp for OT
- Day 1 medical, dental, vision
- Unlimited PTO
