What are the responsibilities and job description for the Inventory Assistant position at Candlewick Press?
Reports to: Inventory Director
The Walker Books Group, one of the world’s leading publishers of books and content for young readers, seeks an Inventory Assistant to support Holiday House and Peachtree. Reporting to the Inventory Director, the Inventory Assistant plays an important role in the management of our warehouse inventory of over 7,000 active titles. The Inventory Assistant works with both our distributor and our freight forwarders to resolve stock related issues, manages warehouse workorders for building assortments and box sets, and actively participates in preparation and follow-up from weekly reprint meetings. This position also handles daily questions and requests from internal departments (primarily production, sales/marketing) and external partners (warehouse distribution, freight forwarders, export suppliers).
Tasks will include monitoring deliveries and coordinating timely stock availability with our distributor and freight forwarders; assisting with special handling and custom packaging projects at the warehouse; and assisting in preparing for, and attending, weekly meetings. The position also reviews the daily top selling sales report and weekly backorder report and recommends titles needing reprints; acts as the main contact for export orders going to Australia and the UK, with responsibility for promptly fulfilling their stock and sample requests, and resolving any questions or problems they have with Candlewick Press inventory.
This position will work closely with our US and Canadian distribution partner, as well as our own production and sales/marketing departments to help ensure the smooth and timely flow of inventory into the warehouse and assist in the preparation of our weekly new title releases.
Qualifications and skills:
- Two years of book publishing, bookstore, or book distribution experience
- Strong computer skills including extensive knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- Understanding of and ability to work with sales and inventory data
- Excellent communication and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks
- Experience with supply chain and import/export freight logistics a plus
This is a full-time position based in our Somerville office, with eventual eligibility for hybrid work.
