About the Position
The Veterinarian is responsible for providing excellent veterinary care to all Canine Companions dogs and puppies. This position also plays a key role in providing veterinary training, support and guidance to regional campuses to help ensure the health and welfare of dogs in professional training, puppies placed with volunteers and service dogs placed with clients.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned as needed:
- Provide preventative and routine veterinary care at the Schulz Veterinary Hospital and perform procedures such as surgery, (including spay/neuter, C-sections, mass removals, and other soft tissue surgeries), dentistry, radiology and ultrasonography. Provide emergency services when able and necessary.
- Perform OFA and PennHIP radiographs.
- Provide medical evaluations and recommendations regarding acceptance and dismissal from the service dog program.
- Train and provide guidance to veterinary, canine early care, puppy and canine wellness staff and volunteers, including development and presentation of educational materials.
- Assist the Canine Companions breeding program by providing veterinary care to breeder dogs and puppies. Provide after-hours telemedicine support to non-veterinary staff and volunteers managing breeder dogs and litters, including during whelps.
- Develop and help oversee protocols to mitigate the spread of canine infectious diseases.
- Provide veterinary support and guidance to all regional campuses regarding health and husbandry of Canine Companions dogs.
- Demonstrate compliance with medical protocols and veterinary procedures for Canine Companions dogs; update techniques and methods as needed to maintain high standards of care. Maintain continuing educations requirements for state veterinary licensure.
- Consult with outside veterinarians caring for puppies and dogs to ensure care and treatments are in alignment with organizational practices.
EXPECTATIONS:
To be successful in this position:
- Must Haves:
- EXPERIENCE: Five years of prior practice as a licensed veterinarian. Experience in endoscopy and laparoscopic procedures preferred
- EDUCATION: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine
- LICENSE/Certification: CA State Veterinary license. USDA-APHIS certification (health certificates). Drug Enforcement Agency License (controlled substances). Willingness to become PennHIP certified.
- Able to perform several tasks concurrently, time management and organizational skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and oral, verbal and written communication skills.
- Able to maintain confidential information.
- Able to work independently as well as to direct, train and motivate others.
- Able to use computers, word processing, spreadsheets, email and database applications.
- Commitment to practicing excellent veterinary medicine and ensuring welfare of dogs.
SCHEDULE: Full Time. Additionally, this position requires responding to after-hours emergent and non-emergent communication (phone & email) on a rotating scheduled basis.
PAY: $140,000-$160,000 annually.
The base salary range above represents the range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of total compensation package for employees.
