Job Overview Canisius University is seeking a full-time Lieutenant for the Department of Public Safety in Student Affairs. Please note that the specific shift for this position has yet to be determined and will be assigned based on departmental needs.

Job Summary The Lieutenant will oversee the daily operations of the Public Safety department, providing strong leadership and guidance during routine and emergency situations. Responsibilities include managing shift schedules, ensuring proper enforcement of policies, and promoting community safety through problem-solving and strategic decision-making.
Key Responsibilities:
- Supervise and lead officers on duty, providing direction and support
- Ensure the enforcement of the department’s rules and regulations and the Jesuit values of the University
- Respond to and lead in emergency situations, including medical, fire, and crime-related incidents
- Manage shift scheduling, ensuring appropriate staffing levels
- Review and approve incident reports and investigations
- Maintain clear communication with the Director of Public Safety regarding serious incidents
- Promote professional development opportunities for Public Safety officers and staff
- Assist students, faculty, staff, and law enforcement as necessary
What We’re Looking For:
Required:
- At least 21 years of age
- 3-4 years of college education or equivalent law enforcement/security/military experience
- Certified New York State Peace Officer or Police Officer
- Valid New York State Driver’s License with a clean driving record
- Valid New York State Pistol Permit
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physical tasks such as running for short distances
- Must be eligible to work in the U.S.
Preferred:
- Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role within law enforcement or security
- Familiarity with MSDS, NYSPIN, CAD, and other law enforcement systems
