Public Safety Dispatcher – Part-Time/Weekends
Canisius University – Department of Public Safety Location: Buffalo, NY Position Type: Part Time (Saturday & Sunday 7 AM to 3 PM)
Canisius University is looking for a detail-oriented Public Safety Dispatcher to join our Public Safety team. This part-time, weekend position plays a crucial role in ensuring the smooth operation of our campus safety systems, handling both emergency and non-emergency calls, and supporting our community with efficiency and care. What You'll Do:
- Dispatch Emergency Services: Operate the Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) system to evaluate, prioritize, and relay emergency calls to the appropriate units.
- Monitor Safety Systems: Utilize radio communications, fire alarm systems, and the university ID card system to assist in emergency response and routine operations.
- Interact with Campus and Public: Serve as a key point of contact for students, faculty, staff, the general public, and law enforcement agencies.
- Clerical Support: Perform clerical duties related to the maintenance and release of information to law enforcement and other public safety entities.
- Work Under Pressure: Handle emergency situations with clarity and composure, ensuring timely response while maintaining a professional and calm demeanor.
What You Need:
- Education & Experience: High school diploma or GED. At least 1 year of experience in radio communications or a related field. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
- Tech Skills: Proficiency in Microsoft Office and the ability to learn new computer programs and systems.
- Communication: Clear communication skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to follow instructions in a fast-paced environment.
- Professionalism: Ability to work well with diverse groups, including students, faculty, staff, and external agencies.
- Physical Requirements: Must be comfortable sitting for extended periods and work weekends (Saturday & Sunday) during the day or afternoon shifts.
Compensation & Benefits:
- Hourly Wage: $15.60 per hour
- Training: Completion of dispatcher training course required.
- Work Schedule: Part-time, weekend shifts (Day and Afternoon Shifts)
