Cannabis for Conservation is a 501(c)(3) environmental nonprofit whose mission is to conserve persisting natural resources, restore degraded ecosystems, and educate communities to prevent further impacts from unsustainable cannabis cultivation. Our focus is on enhancing and restoring landscapes that have been impacted by cannabis cultivation, and transitioning monocrop cannabis farms to functional agro-ecosystems for the benefit of wildlife, land, water, and our communities. Briefly, we manage a variety of grant-funded projects that include watershed enhancement and restoration, rare and declining pollinator research, wildfire resilience and forest management, aquatic invasive species management, and environmental compliance and education.

Grants Manager

Role: The Grants Manager will be responsible for the majority of grant administration for CFC, including grant invoicing, budget tracking, progress reporting, and final reporting. This position will also have the prominent role in identifying and tracking relevant grant solicitations, applying for and developing new applications, evaluating project success, and being the primary point of organizational contact with funders. This position will have a thorough understanding of grants management and administration and will ensure that all projects are meeting grant deliverables and milestones. The Grants Manager will develop and submit invoices according to grant guidelines, templates, and timelines, and communicate with CFC staff, collaborators, and subcontractors to ensure invoices, receipts, quotes, and all other grant related requirements are up-to-date, complete, and reflective of appropriate discounts and tax rates. The Grants Manager will also maintain internal budget tracking documents in Google Drive and/or other software, and will check-in with funding grant managers and attend relevant meetings. This position will work closely with the Development Director on new applications and project development. The Grants Manager will also create new tracking documents and organize Google Drive folders for new grants using established standard operating procedures.

Skills:

  • Experience administering, managing, and applying for large environmental grants ($1M ) from state, federal, and private foundation programs
  • Strong attention to detail and skills in organization, grammar, spelling, and writing effectively and efficiently
  • Experience with budget tracking in Excel/Google Sheets, identifying and correcting errors; knowledge of basic bookkeeping principles
  • Ability to work independently, be self-starting, and be creative in problem-solving
  • Expertise in task management and development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for tracking project deliverables
  • Excellent proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office, with the ability to create professional reports using Adobe and/or Canva

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, or a related field
  • 4 years of experience working in project and grants management
  • Experience tracking and managing budgets, ensuring they align with project goals, and effectively communicating necessary adjustments
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills, with experience maintaining internal documents to monitor project success and communicating with a variety of stakeholders about project milestones
  • Experience using task management software
  • Basic knowledge of environmental topics such as ecology, wildlife, and restoration Desired Qualifications:
  • A master’s degree in Environmental Studies, Business Administration, Nonprofit Management, or a related field
  • 7 years of experience working in project and grants management
  • Direct experience collaborating with environmental engineers, restoration crews, hardware suppliers, construction crews, and regulatory agencies, as well as experience communicating project status with funders and private landowners
  • Familiarity with the California Human Resources Manual travel reimbursement procedures, as well as CA nonprofit regulations and compliance
  • Extensive knowledge of environmental topics such as ecology, wildlife, and restoration; experience managing grants related to environmental topics
  • Experience conducting peer-reviewed literature reviews and including cited information in grant applications
  • Experience utilizing Asana

The Grants Manager position is a full-time (40 hours per week), permanent position. This position is hybrid-remote, with weekly required in-office time and flexible remote time.

Reporting and Communication

The Grants Manager will report directly to the Executive Director at CFC and will collaborate closely with the Development Director. This position will communicate with staff involved in project activities for basic grant-related tasks, such as invoicing and progress tracking. Regular weekly check-ins and updates will be required to ensure alignment with project goals and timelines, as tracked in Asana, our task management platform.

Compensation

This is an hourly position with office days expected to be the typical 8-hour day, five days per week. Compensation will range between $34-41/hr DOE, with annual raises with sufficient performance.
