Legal Assistant Criminal Law

Cannon & Associates
Edmond, OK Full Time
POSTED ON 3/2/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/22/2025

We're looking for a Spanish Speaking Legal Assistant with criminal law experience to join our criminal law practice at our Downtown location. You will need to assist our team through each phase of litigation, including investigation, discovery, pleadings, and trial. You will work side by side with attorneys and paralegals, assisting in depositions, preparing witnesses, and research. We are a growing law firm in Edmond, Oklahoma City, and Norman with twelve attorneys in family and criminal litigation. You will need to be able to suggest improvements to our systems to make our office run more efficiently. You should only apply if you are a person who can adapt to change and wants to make our whole team better. You will need to be able to tolerate ambiguity or changes in instructions in some assigned tasks. This may appear in the form of systems that are in development or quick direction for a task that needs to be completed. You should only apply if you are a compassionate person who can deal with people going through a very emotional and / or difficult time in their lives. You must be a positive person. When you are conducting business on behalf of the firm, you will be the representative of our firm to everyone you come in contact with. You must be able to talk to people in a manner that is polite, educated, and puts them at ease. You can’t talk down to the people you deal with, nor should you get angry quickly. You will need to be comfortable communicating with clients, court staff, and other persons or entities via telephone, email, and in person. You will need to have a caring attitude and a passion for helping people. You should apply if you have these criteria and want to serve clients. We sometimes have difficult clients, so you must have thick skin. When dealing with difficult clients, you must ensure you can maintain a demeanor that does not reveal they are getting under your skin. We will not allow you to be mistreated by any potential or existing client; however, despite policies and procedures to address these issues, some people are simply difficult. You should apply if you have thick skin and you can deal with difficult people. Proficiency and comfort with technology are important. A basic understanding of Microsoft Word is a requirement. Experience using Macs and Clio Practice Management is preferred, but not required. You should apply if you are comfortable with technology. Our files are maintained in a paper format and a digital format. You must be able to understand how the files are stored in both formats and follow a standardized procedure for ensuring the files are properly organized. You will be expected to review files prior to court hearings and meetings with clients to ensure all documents needed for the file are in the file and properly organized. You will deal with the occasional frustration of having a file brought back from court that needs to be reorganized. You should apply if you are interested in keeping order in our files and our firm. You will be assisting in drafting documents. Some will be drafted using templates, while others will be drafted with nothing to go by but oral instruction. All documents are expected to have proper grammar and spelling. You should apply if you are comfortable writing legal documents. You may be asked to assist with drafting discovery requests and formatting responses in criminal law matters, which requires attention to detail, the ability to follow directions, and abide by deadlines. You also need to be detail-oriented and willing to go the extra mile to get the job done right the first time. While efficiency is important, spending extra time to ensure the job is done right the first time will save attorney time, which will make you more valuable to the office. You must work with this goal in mind. This is a vital skill for this job; you should apply if you are good with details. You must be self-motivated to find tasks that need to be accomplished and accomplish them. If you are the type of person who finishes a task and then looks for the next project or asks for the next assignment; then you should apply. You must be able to work well with others. We will continue to grow in support staff and attorneys over the next year and beyond. You must learn to work well with others who work at our firm. If you work well with others to get the job done right the first time, this is the job for you. At times, you will also need to know how to figure things out on your own and be able to creatively problem-solve and come up with solutions. You should apply if you are a problem solver. If you have gotten this far and are thinking about applying it means that you are a hard worker, ready for a challenge, and want to be part of a firm where your hard work and efforts are recognized, appreciated, and rewarded. Compensation commensurate with experience. How To Apply : In your cover letter, which will accompany your resume, let us know what you think it takes to be a Legal Assistant at our firm.
