The Cannon Beach Lifeguards are searching for individuals with the following qualities:
- Confident athletes, surfers or swimmers willing to learn and apply new skills
- Those interested in a public safety career or are comfortable responding to an emergency situation
- Ability to be highly attentive and observant
- Performs well both independently and as a team player
- Committed to helping safeguard the citizens and visitors of Cannon Beach
Starting in 2025 the Cannon Beach Lifeguards are obtaining an agency certification from the United States Lifesaving Association. This certification is a challenging yet very rewarding certification for our lifeguards to hold and sets our standards to the same as many other beach lifeguard agencies around the US; including agencies in Hawaii, California, Florida and more. Cannon Beach Lifeguards have been watching the shores near the iconic Haystack Rock since 1938. We are proud to hold the first USLA ocean lifeguard agency certification in the state of Oregon since USLA began the well respected accreditation program in 1993.
Requirements:
-Pass a pool swim assessment consisting of; a 550 yard swim in 10 minutes, 400 yard buddy tow in 15 minutes, swim 25 yards and retrieve a brick at the bottom of the pool then swim 25 yards with the brick in 2 minutes, and tread water for 15 minutes.
-Pass an ocean swim assessment consisting of; swimming through the surf zone and treading water for 5 minutes in the “impact” zone, paddle through the surf and return to the shore on a rescue board, and ocean confidence swim around Haystack Rock (depending on predicted ocean conditions)
-Posses a valid driver’s license, be able to obtain an Oregon ATV card, be at least 16 years of age at the time of assessment, pass a criminal background check, drug screening and physical health assessment.
*If you do not pass the swim assessment on your first try you will have an opportunity to retest.
If an applicant is not able to meet certain physical requirements the Cannon Beach Fire District Ocean Safety Division may also select candidates for positions that work closely with the lifeguards, with the goal of eventually becoming a USLA certified lifeguard depending on the applicant’s skills and abilities.
