What you'll do
The Consumer Loan Underwriter is responsible for reviewing consumer loans to ensure sound credit quality and determine loan eligibility in compliance with all policies, state and federal laws and regulations. This person will provide prompt, accurate and courteous service to all Canvas team members with a focus on promoting member relationships that exceed expectations. The Consumer Loan Underwriter is responsible for creating consistency in lending decisions by providing ongoing coaching to retail family members, development/implementation of lending policies and procedures, and collaborative training amongst the underwriting team as necessary to exceed organizational lending goals.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Effectively utilize provided lending authority, including exception authority to make decisions on consumer loan applications.
- Underwrite an array of consumer loans which include: personal loans, direct/indirect auto loans, miscellaneous collateralized loans, and credit cards.
- Provide supporting documentation related to loan decisions to properly mitigate and document policy exceptions.
- Demonstrate consistency with underwriting decisions and communicate effectively with all team members.
- Contribute to increasing member value, coaching co-workers, and member education.
- Promote Canvas products by actively seeking out opportunities for additional cross-sell opportunities.
- Assist the Consumer Loan Underwriting Supervisor and Dealer Representatives in developing extraordinary automobile dealer relationships that ensure volume objectives, credit quality, and appropriate risk levels by portfolio.
- Directly serves strategic initiatives set by senior leadership and the executive lending team
- Regularly exercises independent judgment on matters of significance related to consumer underwriting at the credit union
- Maintain a high level of service, consistency, and professionalism by delivering Canvas’ Core Values to both internal and external members and business partners.
- Act as a liaison to all Canvas family members and automobile dealers.
- Ensure application information and decisions comply with Canvas’ policies and procedures and all state and federal laws and regulations including: HMDA (Home Mortgage Disclosure Act). RESPA (Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act), Regulation B (ECOA), Bank Secrecy Act (BSA), Regulation Z and FCRA (Fair Credit Reporting Act).
- Assist in creating, supporting, and promoting Credit Union policies and procedures, objectives and programs.
- Exhibit support for the organization’s goals, values, initiatives and cost control.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with internal partners and external vendors.
- Assist other departments and branches with various operational needs and provide exceptional underwriting support.
- Follow all safety and security guidelines to properly safeguard member and organization assets.
- Embrace ongoing education and learn/apply new skills and software applications.
- Regular attendance and punctuality are essential functions of the job
- Perform other job duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications
Knowledge, Skill and Ability:
- Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to explain programs, loan terms, features, policies and benefits to customers and business partners.
- Understanding of financial institution reporting and vision set for Canvas.
- Strong relationship building and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work with a diverse customer base while providing excellent customer service.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational and time management skills; ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
- Solid knowledge and understanding of Canvas financial products and services.
- Proficient in MS Office (Outlook, Excel, Word).
- Ability to calculate Debt to Income Ratio, Unsecured Ratio, Loan to Value Ratio, APY, APR and other formulas related to the underwriting process.
- Ability to maintain confidences.
Education or Formal Training: Two-year college degree or completion of a specialized course of study at a business or trade school or three years of equivalent work experience.
Experience: One to three years of underwriting or indirect lending experience.
This position has a starting pay range of $56,485.00-$66,982.38/annual, and final pay rate will be determined based on experience, education, skills, and internal equity factors.

Working Environment/Physical Activities
High volume, fast-paced, dynamic office environment. Must be able to work a flexible schedule Monday thru Saturday including holidays. The job routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, copiers, fax machines and filing cabinets. The position requires manual dexterity, the ability to lift files and open filing cabinets. The position requires bending, stooping, or standing as necessary.
