Primary Purpose:

Direct and manage the overall program of instructional music for the assigned campus(es).  Provide students with an opportunity to participate in extracurricular band activities and ensure compliance with all state, University Interscholastic League (UIL), and district requirements.  Plan activities and set goals to achieve district, region, and state recognition.

           

 

Qualifications:

 

Education/Certification:

Bachelor’s degree from accredited university or enrolled in approved bachelor’s degree program

Valid Texas teaching certification or permit with required endorsements for subject and level assigned

Other requirements set by Board of Education

 

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Knowledge of overall operation of instrumental music program

Ability to manage budget and personnel

Knowledge of state and UIL policies governing band

Ability to interpret policy, procedures, and data

Strong communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills     

 

Experience:

Band director or band assistant band director experience, preferred

 

 

 

Major Responsibilities and Duties

           

Program Planning

  1. Direct junior high instrumental performers, including concert bands, soloists and all ensembles as needed or required.
  2. Establish performance requirements, enforce academic requirements, and verify each student’s eligibility to participate in band.
  3. Provide for band participation for school activities including concerts, pep rallies, TMEA All-Region Auditions and Performances and UIL activities as needed or required.
  4. Arrange transportation in accordance with district procedures.
  5. Comply with federal and state laws, State Board of Education, UIL rules, and board policy as they apply to band.
  6. Obtain and use evaluative findings (including student achievement data) to determine program effectiveness and ensure that program renewal is continuous and responds to student needs.

 

Budget and inventory

  1. Ensure that programs are cost effective and funds are managed wisely.
  2. Compile budgets and cost estimates based on documented program needs.
  3. Coordinate fund-raising activities as approved by the district and manage funds associated with such fund-raisers.
  4. Maintain current inventory of all fixed assets within the department.
  5. Oversee process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all band equipment.

 

Instruction

  1. Develop and implement plans for instrumental music program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  2. Prepare lessons that reflect accommodations for individual student differences.
  3. Present subject matter according to guidelines established by the Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administrative regulations.
  4. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  5. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing and observations.
  6. Create an environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students.

 

Student Management

  1. Apply and enforce student discipline in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and Student handbook.
  2. Accompany and supervise students on out-of-town trips, ensuring adequate number of sponsors as required.
  3. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  4. Refer students to special programs as needed.

Communication

  1. Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, principals, and teachers.
  2. Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  3. Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.

 

Personnel Management

  1. Assist with recruitment, selection, training, supervision, and evaluation of assistant band directors as needed.
  2. Work in harmony with peers and associates. Insure and implement strategies for effective vertical team alignment.

 

Professional Growth and Development

  1. Participate in staff development to improve job-related skills.
  2. Document staff development/professional growth/curriculum planning hours for Standard Certificate Renewal if on a standard certificate with 5-year expiration.
  3. Participate in T-TESS evaluation and accept supervision for and feedback of duty performance.
  4. Respond to suggestions for improvements in a positive manner.
  5. Display professionalism in dealing with students, parents, staff, and community.
  6. Be punctual and maintain regular attendance.
  7. Maintain a professional appearance.
  8. Maintain confidentiality of student records as appropriate.
  9. Use professional information discreetly and judiciously.
  10. Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Working Conditions

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:

Maintain emotional control under stress.  Frequent district and occasional state-wide travel; prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor and indoor work; exposure to sun, heat, cold, and inclement weather.  Frequent lifting, stooping, climbing, standing, and bending.
