Overview:
The Outdoor Sports Guide position is nonexempt, commissioned, and non-supervisory. Guides are primarily responsible for the safety and enjoyment of guests participating in Canyon Ranch outdoor activities. The position is supervised by the Outdoor Sport Manager or in the absence of the Manager, the Outdoor Sports Supervisor. Outdoor Sports Guides must be willing to take direction from the Manager as part of the training and instruction period to gain understanding of departmental operations. Guide must always present a positive and professional image to colleagues and guests. Guides must adhere to Canyon Ranch standards for guest service.
Operations: Outdoor Guides lead or tail guest activities and effectively employ knowledge and experience to guide guests safely through the activities offered by the ODS department. Employees demonstrate knowledge of trail, lake, & river locations and bike routes. They exhibit the skills and techniques required to conduct and instruct ODS activities. Outdoor Guides will always follow all safety requirements and ensure the guests and fellow staff members safety. Guides will instruct guests in proper operation and safety techniques for outdoor programming. Guides will report unsafe equipment or conditions to manager immediately.
You will need to be 21 years of age or older and have a valid state driver's license with no moving violations for the previous 3 years.

Responsibilities:
As an Outdoor Sports Guide, you will play the role of an “ambassador of fun”, engaging our guests, keeping them entertained and safe. You will be introducing both locals and tourists to the area’s unique and popular attractions and activities. You will also instruct guests in proper operation of bicycles, safe and efficient cycling techniques and proper hiking techniques. You will operate a 15-passenger van, at times pulling a large bike trailer. Our tours are generally on the smaller/ more intimate side of less than 7 people, but can also be larger with multiple guides, so you have to like both working independently and working effectively as part of a team.

Guest Service: Guides will be responsible, strong team members who always strive for great guest service, results, teamwork and improvement. They will endeavor to delight and demonstrate deep caring for the guests with whom they interact and or lead. Guides will engage with guests during ODS activities to ensure a positive guest experience. They will monitor guest progress, participation, and satisfaction with each activity and adapt to meet the guests' needs.
Preparation: Guides will ensure the care of all ODS equipment. They will perform pre-event preparation (prep) and post-event cleanup (de-prep) of cans, equipment, food containers, etc. Guides will keep work areas clean including vehicles and kitchen. All vehicles keys and equipment will be put away during closing procedures each day. Guides will participate in seasonal clean-up, repair, transport, and/or set-up of gear and/or facilitation areas i.e. ropes course, archery range, bike shed etc.
Vehicle Operation: Guides will operate 15 passenger vans. They may also need to pull a large trailer. Guides will obey all traffic rules and Canyon Ranch protocols. Guides are responsible for gassing the vans.
Qualifications:
Education: High School Diploma or GED. It is preferred that you have 2 years of experience in guiding, recreation, sports or customer service.
Schedule: Varies, on-call, weekends, and holidays
Effort: Work is extremely strenuous in nature.
Mental Exertion: Work requires moderate mental concentration to execute moderately complex tasks.
Shift: Typically works first shift or a daytime schedule.
Environment: Work takes place outside.
Noise/Hazards: Exposure to dust, fumes, heat or other environmental factors.
You will need to be 21 years of age or older and have a valid state driver's license with no moving violations for the previous 3 years.
You absolutely, positively need to enjoy spending time with people and being able to carry the conversation easily and engagingly. If you have a background, interest or skills in bicycling, that is a huge plus.
Additional Required Certification/License:
- MA Drivers License and clean driving record to meet Group A Driving Requirements.
- ACCT Facilitator Training if leading Ropes course.
- First Aid Certified within 90 days of employment. (prefer Wilderness First Aid, but not required)
