Position Summary
The position of Gallery Director plays a critical management-focused role with a philosophy that fosters an all-hands approach. The Gallery Director shall be involved in most aspects of running the Gallery, but focused primarily on sales, customer service, logistics, and curation, helping Gallery Owner in managing workflow for other employees.
Gallery Director must possess a career-focused desire to work in a fine art gallery. They must have strong leadership, project management and luxury sales skills. Additionally, they must be personable, energetic, positive-thinking, motivated, organized, and enjoy working in a leadership role directly under Gallery Owner, interfacing with employees, contractors and artists, in any capacity that helps Gallery run smoothly as deemed necessary by Gallery Owner.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Sales and Customer Service
  • Drive gallery sales by building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, collectors, and patrons.
  • Provide exceptional customer service by understanding client needs and offering tailored recommendations.
  • Develop and implement sales strategies to achieve revenue goals.
  • Leadership and Team Management
  • Supervise, mentor, and motivate employees to maintain a high-performing team.
  • Delegate tasks effectively and manage workflow to ensure operational efficiency.
  • Act as a liaison between the gallery owner, staff, contractors, and artists.
  • Logistics and Operations
  • Oversee daily operations, including scheduling, inventory management, and gallery maintenance.
  • Manage the logistics of art installations, shipping, and receiving.
  • Ensure all processes comply with gallery policies and standards.
  • Curation and Exhibitions
  • Assist in planning and curating exhibitions, working closely with artists and the gallery owner.
  • Research and recommend potential artists and artworks for display.
  • Help coordinate events, openings, and special gallery projects.
  • Project Management
  • Oversee multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring deadlines and quality standards are met.
  • Collaborate with the gallery owner on long-term planning and strategic initiatives.
  • Relationship Building
  • Foster strong partnerships with artists, contractors, and industry professionals.
  • Represent the gallery at events, expanding its network and reputation.
  • Develop innovative ways to engage the local and broader art community.
  • Administrative Support
  • Maintain accurate records of sales, inventory, and client interactions.
  • Prepare reports and updates for the gallery owner as needed.
  • Assist with marketing efforts, including social media management and promotional campaigns.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities)

  • 2 years previous gallery work experience.
  • B.A. or higher-level degree.
  • Knowledge of, and enthusiasm for, contemporary art within context of the retail environment.
  • Experience with managing employees, delegating, and customer service.
  • Able to perform moderate physical work.
  • Experience with logistics, operations as pertaining to fine art retail.
  • Able to follow through and close sales from beginning to end, through successful delivery of artwork.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient computer skills in a Mac environment using light Photoshop, Excel, Word and Cloud-based databases, ArtCloud and Artsy, once Employee has been trained.
  • Basic graphic design in Photoshop and similar programs for digital and print, a plus.
  • Some experience and knowledge of accounting and cash flow, a plus.

Physical Demands of Work Environment
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

  • Must be available all weekend days, holidays and special events with few exceptions.
  • Comfort with use of ladders, track lighting, hammers, moving sculpture and wall art.

Compensation and Pay Structure
Our commission-forward pay structure is designed to reward highly self-motivated individuals who thrive in a sales-driven environment. As part of our team, you’ll be paid a base hourly wage and a pooled monthly commission plan with three participants collectively receiving 9% of net sales until the gallery’s sales goal is achieved. Once the sales goal is met, your collective commission increases to 12% of gross sales for any additional sales that month.

As an art gallery, we reward individuals who are passionate about art and motivated to contribute to the gallery’s financial success.
