Position Summary:
Reports to the unit Director and works under the supervision and/or direction of a Clinical Nurse Leader or Supervisor. Applicable to students who have been accepted into an accredited school of nursing and has completed their first clinical rotation. The student nurse extern will work under the direction of an approved preceptor. The student nurse extern may rotate departments with approval of the Directors involved and the CNO. The care provided by an unlicensed Nurse Extern includes basic data collection and documentation of client progress in the medical record; observing, performing and documenting approved nursing procedures in the medical record include administration of oxygen, attending to the clients' comfort needs and performing specific duties related to the assigned nursing unit as delegated by the RN. The student nurse extern will be authorized to perform all technical skills completed as a part of the course work already signed off by Cochise College, under the direction of the assigned RN preceptor. The student nurse extern must strictly adhere to the skills they have already practiced and signed off in the nursing program. The student nurse extern may perform acts that are routinely of any nursing assistant job description including foley catheter care, bathing, telemetry electrode placement, vital sign monitoring, postmortem care, intake and output, patient transport, and specimen collection. ***Per Diem Position***
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher
- Must have been accepted into an accredited school of nursing and completed their first clinical rotation.
- Must complete FERPA waiver for Cochise College and maintain it throughout the externship.
- Must obtain CPR and Handle with Care within 90 days of hire.
