This position is for the 2025-26 school year, and will begin on August 11, 2025
JOB DESCRIPTION
The Behavior Specialist will develop, organize and support the implementation of programs designed to increase student learning and growth. The Specialist will support students, staff and administration in the area of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. The Behavior Specialist will work collaboratively to develop a consultation model intended to build district capacity to systematically address student behavioral needs. The Specialist will provide supervision and management of behavior specialist, lead teachers, and district paraeducators. They will coordinate professional learning to ensure that services are delivered in accordance with best practice in the profession. They will follow the regulations associated with IDEA, FAPE, procedural safeguards, and IEP development and implementation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Demonstrate foresight, examines issues and takes initiatives to improve the quality of behavior education in the district.
- Expert knowledge of function-based intervention planning for the development of behavior change strategies that focus on reducing problem behavior and increasing more appropriate behavior.
- Expert knowledge of techniques needed to successfully complete effective Functional Behavior Assessments (FBA), function–based interventions, and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP).
- Exceptional knowledge in the use of assessment and assessment data to inform instruction and prescribe work plans for individual students.
- Stays abreast of new research and innovative practices.
- Makes data based decisions and is well versed in data interpretation.
- Demonstrate instructional leadership.
- Demonstrates exceptional skill in the roles of a teacher leader: collaborator, action researcher, reflective practitioner, and learner advocate.
- Use supervision, staff development and performance evaluation to improve the educational program.
- Maintain a familiarity with current educational issues through a process of ongoing personal development.
- Work cooperatively with building administration and staff in planning, implementing and managing programs and services for students with disabilities.
- Collaborates with team members, agencies, and parents.
- Coordinates and conducts professional development.
- Highly skilled in communication and people skills.
- Manages stressful situations.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics of educations organization.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the IEP writing and implementation process.
- Expert knowledge in research based instructional strategies and ability to implement them effectively.
- Exceptional knowledge in the use of technology to support instruction

During times of state or district emergency, all employees may be required to perform additional duties that are not required on a normal basis in support of educational and operational priorities. e.g. Performs general cleaning and sanitizing of work areas, provides remote assistance to students and staff, and any other reasonable duty as needed.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Requires a valid Professional Educator License with the State of Utah with relevant “License Area of Concentration” and “Endorsement”, if applicable.
- Requires five (5) years of successful teaching as a special education teacher or related work experience.
- Incumbent must be fingerprinted and clear a criminal backgrounds check.
- Knowledge about IDEA Regulations.
- Superb interpersonal skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication.
- Ability to collaborate and mentor.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to attend to details.
- Requires a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university.
- Safety Care Certification or willingness to become Safety Care Certified Trainer within three months of hire.
- Requires a valid driver’s license.
NOTE: The Administration reserves the right to require specific training for this position. However, depending upon the type and quality of prior work experience and availability of formal training programs, some exchanges can be made between training and experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS-Not limited to the following:
- While performing the duties of this job, the coordinator is regularly required to speak and/or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The coordinator is occasionally required to use hands to handle or feel and must occasionally climb or balance.
- The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
- The coordinator must be able to respond to the unique educational needs of students with disabilities in a stressful setting.
- This job may emphasize intervention with and management of aggressive and self-abusive students, angry students, emotional students, students with infectious diseases, and personal physical abuse.
- Physical ability to perform the essential functions listed above with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Requires the ability to lift a minimum of ten (10) pounds.
- Possess the physical, mental, and emotional stability to work under stressful conditions, including but not limited to: deadlines, contract requirements, inspection requirements, and interaction with critical personnel.
