The Santa Clarita Community College District / College of the Canyons is seeking a full-time Facilities Engineer in the Facilities Services division.

Salary Placement :

Salary placement will be on Range 37 of Classified Represented Salary Schedule B.

Initial salary step placement for new employees is customarily at step 1, 2, or 3 ($6,411.00 / $6,811.00 / $7,205.00 per month) of this 20-step salary range.

Probationary period for new Classified employees is six months. Work year is 12 calendar months. The normal workweek for this position is 40 hours. Paid holiday, discretionary, and sick time are provided. Ten vacation days accrue during the first year of employment. A regular work schedule will be assigned, with the ability to occasionally work a flexible schedule as needed with supervisor approval.

Position Description :

Under the supervision of the Associate Vice President, Facilities and Operations, and under the work direction of the Maintenance Lead, performs a variety of skilled work in the maintenance, repair and alteration of district buildings, facilities and fixtures including carpentry and tile, painting, plastering, plumbing, heating / air conditioning and electrical trades work. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties :

Performs skilled tasks in the installation, maintenance, repair and construction work in advanced maintenance trades, such as carpentry, painting, plastering, electrical, plumbing, heating, air conditioning, locksmithing, carpet and tile installation, vehicle / equipment mechanic, metalsmithing and mechanical repair work.

Performs diverse functions in the construction, installation and maintenance of roofs, furniture, fences, cabinets, shelving, chalkboards, bulletin boards and a variety of other structures.

Performs the installation, repair and maintenance of gas, water, sewer and storm drain lines.

Installs and repairs door and window glass.

Performs the repair and maintenance of heating, ventilation and cooling equipment, controls and systems.

Replaces and repairs carpeting and floor tile.

Performs the installation, repair and maintenance of door locks and closures.

Welds metal parts together using gas and various electric welding processes and fabricates metal and sheet metal structural items.

Operates, maintains and repairs all types of equipment, such as light trucks, tractors, forklifts, scissor lifts, boom lifts, aerial lifts and other related motorized equipment.

Performs general maintenance activities on pools and fountains as required.

Performs minor and new installations of District facilities' equipment.

Develops, plans and carries out preventative maintenance programs of District facilities, equipment and buildings. Monitors and maintains preventative maintenance for heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment including replacing belts, changing filters, and coil cleaning.

Prepares and maintains preventative maintenance reports, databases, records and logs including but not limited to computer logs, daily activity reports and trending data as required. Ensures accuracy of all data entered. Prepares written and oral reports.

Maintains and repairs plumbing fixtures including sinks, toilets, faucets, dispensers, and pipes; clears obstructions from waterlines, sewer lines, drains and sump pumps.

Operates and maintains a variety of mechanical tools and equipment such as power saws, power sanders, drills, air compressors, paint sprayers, sewer augers, and various hand tools required for carpentry, plumbing, and maintenance skills.

Inspects facility to identify safety hazards and building maintenance needs. Ensures all repairs meet OSHA standards and regulations.

Repairs and maintains wood structures.

Assembles prefabricated furniture.

Monitors and maintains mechanical control systems in greenhouse.

Cuts and threads pipe.

Plans, organizes, and oversees construction / maintenance repairs. Makes material and cost estimates and makes purchases for construction / maintenance repairs.

Maintain building management systems to monitor lighting, and electrical systems. Identifies inefficiencies and recommends improvements.

Interprets regulations, policies and safety practices.

Directs the work of adult hourly, college assistants or other temporary personnel as assigned.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

While the preceding duties are the set of general duties for all Facilities Engineer positions, select workers will be assigned to additional tasks specific to Electrical, Locksmithing, Mechanic, Painter and Swimming Pool, as follows :

Electrical :

Plans, troubleshoots, schedules and makes electrical installations.

Modifies, repairs and maintains existing and new electrical equipment and systems including a variety of electrical apparatus, devices and controls. Must have working knowledge of specific systems such as Aphecias, to ensure efficient operation, troubleshooting, and integration.

Locksmithing :

Performs skilled locksmithing functions including installation and maintenance of the District's electronic access control system and database as well as mechanical security devices, door hardware and key systems.

Performs metal fabrication : installs, configures and maintains current and future electronic access control equipment, software, mechanical locking and security devices, door hardware and components. Current systems include Locklink 7.53, Uplink 7.5, Corbin-Russwin Series 70 and Schlage Everest Primus keying and bitting systems.

Cuts, stamps, programs, distributes and tracks keys and TEKs / fobs. Operates testing devices, computer software and other specialized instruments, tools and equipment in the installation, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of electronic access control and mechanical locking devices, equipment and various door and security hardware.

Maintains, tracks, records and updates access requests, key bitting schedules, hardware specifications and vendor catalogs. Maintains and updates computer database.

Mechanic :

Performs maintenance and repair of District-owned gasoline, diesel and electric-powered equipment and vehicles.

Painter :

Prepares surfaces, mixes paints and finishes a variety of equipment, furniture, school and physical structures.

Plans, schedules, installs, maintains, modifies and repairs existing and new building finishes, surfaces, wall components and systems : drywall, paint, ceiling tiles, carpet and vinyl floor surfaces, floor and wall tile, windows and glass.

Swimming Pool :

Performs chemical treatment of pools and fountains.

Performs swimming pool service maintenance and maintains pool facilities and equipment.

Demonstrated Knowledge and Abilities :

Minimum Requirements :

Experience :

Four years of experience as a master level journeyman building maintenance mechanic in one or more building maintenance trades plus two years of specialty training and / or licensed certification (minimum 120 hours). Two of the four years building maintenance requirement can be substituted with two additional years of specialty training in one or more of the following areas :

Building maintenance, plumbing systems, HVAC systems, electrical systems.

Computer-controlled equipment and systems, HVAC and electrical.

Electrical and pneumatic controls, devices and sequences.

Telecommunication and electronic infrastructure and devices.

Heavy-equipment repairs : gasoline, diesel and electric.

Swimming pool facilities and equipment.

Gas, ARC and special welding and materials fabrication.

Swimming pool service maintenance.

Painting systems, drywall and wall components and systems, flooring and ceiling installations or other building finishes.

Vehicle maintenance repair.

Education :

High school diploma or its equivalent supplemented by completion of an approved apprenticeship program or equivalent based on training / experience.

Licenses / Certificates :

Possession and renewal of any professional certificates, certifications or licenses required to maintain accreditation of specialty training.

Physical Characteristics :

This position requires hand and digit dexterity to operate a variety of hand and power tools; walking, standing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling and reaching in awkward positions to install and repair equipment; climbing stairs, pushing and pulling equipment; bending at the waist; working at heights of 50 feet or more on ladders, scaffolds or field poles; working under buildings or in confined spaces; moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds); working outdoors in varying temperatures; vision to read printed materials and to identify and distinguish wiring and equipment; Hearing and speech for normal communications; travel from site-to-site. In the event of an emergency, employees will be relied upon to serve as emergency service workers.
