CAO
Chestertown, MD Full Time
POSTED ON 3/7/2025
AVAILABLE BEFORE 5/6/2025

The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics LLC (CAO) is one of the nation’s largest Orthopaedics practices, owned and operated by physicians, with over 60 locations across Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia.  With approximately 2,000 employees, working in 28 Divisions, CAO is a growing business with revenues of approximately $250 Million. CAO is committed to be the Orthopaedics provider of choice for our patients; partner of choice for payors and health systems; and employer of choice by attracting and retaining a talented workforce.

Chestertown orthopedics is a company providing top quality orthopedic care and physical therapy in Chestertown, MD.  We are looking to add an Orthopedic surgeon and/or physical medicine and rehab physician to the practice.

History:
The practice opened in 1987 by Dr Frederick T Lohr after completing orthopedic residency at university of Maryland and fellowship with Dr James Andrews in sports medicine. Dr Lohr completed additional training in joint replacement in The Netherlands and also traveled to treat war wounded in Pakistan before coming to Chestertown.  The practice has grown since those beginnings and expanded to include physical therapy in 2000.   The relationship as team physician for Washington College a small liberal arts college has continued to this day.

In 2017 Chestertown Orthopedics joined The Centers for Advanced Orthopedics, one of the largest orthopedic groups in the country, as a Division of that group.  This positioned the practice as a part of one of the most vibrant and forward thinking groups in the country and also provided a much higher level of expertise in marketing, data management, HR, and negotiations with insurers and suppliers. This has enabled the practice to become self-insured for both health care and malpractice, improved payment rates and potential for growth.

The Town:
Chestertown is a town of about 5000 people which serves as the center of Kent county Maryland with approximately 18,000 residents.  Chestertown is the county seat and home of Washington College.  The town has grown slowly in the past but is seeing accelerated growth due the quality of life and close proximity (about 90 minutes) from, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington D.C.

The Hospital:

The local hospital is part of Shore Health Systems and is known as Chester River Hospital.  The estimated catchment area of Chester River hospital is 30,000 people. Shore Health system is part of the larger University of Maryland Medical System.  Despite early efforts to close the hospital by the system, The Maryland legislature stepped in and the hospital has entered plans to become a “Rural Hospital” a new class of hospital in Maryland thus ensuring its survival and operating rooms to support orthopedic care and hospital beds for orthopedic patients.  The nearest other hospitals are in Easton MD, Dover DE, Elkton MD, Annapolis MD.

Orthopedic Competition[D1]:

Chestertown Orthopedics is the dominant practice with only one other part time practice (one day per week) provided by Upper Bay orthopedics. A good relationship exists with this one man practice which is also part of the larger CAO group.  Cross coverage and vacation coverage is shared with this group.  The nearest other competing groups are 45 minutes away in Easton,  50 minutes in Annapolis, 45 minutes in Dover De, and 50 minutes in Elkton and 90 minutes to Baltimore and DC.  At present there are no hospital on call requirements for this opportunity.

The current practice is primarily a sports medicine and general orthopedic practice with focus on shoulder and knee arthroscopy and knee replacement.  Room for growth exists in hand surgery, foot and ankle, spine, hip replacements.
