What are the responsibilities and job description for the Social Data Technician/Analyst position at Cap Index?
We are seeking a Social Data Technician/Analyst to join the Research & Innovation team at CAP Index. You’ll play a key part in collecting, cleaning, and organizing large criminological and socio-demographic data from the United States Census and other sources to develop cutting-edge products for crime risk analytic products. The Social Data Technician/Analyst will work closely with a team of criminologists and analysts to identify new sources of data, as well as process (e.g., clean, merge, archive, and quality check) existing data sets to ensure consistency across the company’s platforms.
This role may include some basic descriptive statistical analysis for quality control checking and diagnostics.
The ideal candidate will have experience working with large, social datasets at different geographic levels (e.g., point, block, block group, tract, etc.). Attention to detail, strong skills in data organization and manipulation, and an interest in social research are required. Applicants must demonstrate proficiency in SAS or Stata and Excel, while knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS), SQL, or other statistical software is a plus.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a related field (Statistics, Data Science, Geography, Sociology, Criminology, etc.).
- Proficiency in data processing and management for statistical analysis, including the software packages SAS or Stata and Excel.
- Excellent communication and collaboration.
- Detail-oriented and capable of working independently.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Data Collection & Integration: Gather and integrate crime and socio-demographic data from various sources (NIBRS, US Census Bureau, Bureau of Labor Statistics, etc.), ensuring comprehensive and accurate datasets.
2. Data Cleaning & Validation: Work with a team of analysts and criminologists to identify and correct errors, inconsistencies, and missing data, ensuring the dataset is accurate, reliable, and ready for analysis.
3. Data Organization & Preparation: Structure and format data to facilitate easy access and analysis, ensuring it’s organized in a way that supports reporting and further statistical examination.
The following qualifications and experiences are preferred but not required:
- NIBRS Knowledge: Experience in handling National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS) data, including data validation, collection, and reporting across agencies.
- GIS or Data Pipeline Software: Familiarity with statistical software for GIS (ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online) or data engineering (SQL) is a plus.
- Certification: Relevant certifications in data analysis or related fields.
