The Cape Girardeau Public School District is seeking an Instrumental Music Teacher/Assistant Band Director for Cape Central High School and Cape Central Junior High for the 2025-26 academic year.
Brief Description of Position:
The Junior High/High School Instrumental Music Teacher is responsible for providing high-quality music instruction to students in grades 7-12. This includes directing instrumental ensembles, and fostering a passion for music among students. The teacher will also coordinate performances, collaborate with band staff, and support student growth through engaging and comprehensive instruction.
Required Qualification:
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Education or a related field (Master’s degree preferred).
- Valid state teaching certification in Music (or ability to obtain certification).
- Experience in directing bands or instrumental ensembles preferred.
- Proficiency in a variety of instruments and strong conducting skills.
- Excellent classroom management and instructional skills.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Passion for music education and student success.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan, develop, and deliver engaging instrumental music lessons for junior high and high school students.
- Direct and oversee school bands and small ensembles, including concert and marching bands where applicable.
- Teach music theory, history, and appreciation within the context of music ensemble rehearsals, ensuring students develop a well-rounded understanding of music.
- Prepare students for performances, concerts, competitions, and other musical events.
- Provide individual and group instruction tailored to various skill levels.
- Assess and monitor student progress, providing feedback and support to encourage musical development.
- Maintain an organized and well-managed classroom and rehearsal space.
- Collaborate with other faculty and school staff to support interdisciplinary learning and school events.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and administrators regarding expectations, progress, and performance opportunities.
- Oversee the maintenance and inventory of musical instruments, and other related equipment.
- Stay current with best practices in music education and participate in professional development opportunities.
- Uphold school policies and maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Direct the pep band at home basketball games, stipend provided
