Summary
Directly manages and supervises Health Information Management (HIM) Coding Operations and staff and serves as a subject matter expert in this area. Monitors the daily work activities to make sure key performance metrics, indicators, and goals are met effectively and timely. Monitors staff productivity and work quality and takes appropriate actions when necessary to meet established standards. Establishes and implements operational infrastructure to meet current and future needs in response to operational, regulatory, and technology changes. Develops, coordinates, and oversees implementation of policies and procedures that support revenue cycle and HIM coding functions, and organizational goals. Reports and addresses issues and changes timely and accurately.
Education And Formal Training
Bachelor of Science degree in Health Information Management or related field with RHIA required and CCS/CDIP Preferred. RHIT with 7 years training and coding experience also considered but CCS credential required
Work Experience
Minimum of four (4) years of acute care (inpatient and outpatient) ICD-10 coding experience required, with AHIMA approved ICD-10 trainer preferred. Minimum of three (3) years of Coding Consulting experience or DRG Auditing Required. Minimum of Four (4) years hospital coding supervisory management required in the acute medical surgical area with preferably teaching academic medical center experience. Supervisory Management Experience in a Multi-Hospital system preferred. Experience in the maintenance and management of health information management or related databases required. Candidate must have a working knowledge of statistical data analysis including use of electronic spreadsheets and related coding software.
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Required
Demonstrate knowledge of ICD, CPT, HCCs etc. Working knowledge of DRGs, APCs, modifiers, medical necessity and related coding and reimbursement areas required. Working knowledge of computers and statistical database reporting also required. Must have proven problem- solving abilities and the ability to coordinate staffing and workflow with minimal supervision. Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills. Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, disease processes, treatments and interventions required. Experience working with Electronic Health Record and computer systems and software. Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
Physical Requirements
Requires motor coordination and near visual acuity to operate computer terminals. Sight and speech required to monitor, evaluate and follow-up regarding staff performance and related system issues.
