Summary

Functions as the Surgical Technologist First Assist, may harvest the conduit(s) used for grafting in Cardiac Surgery and first assist the surgeon in performing surgery.

Major Job Functions

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of this job. The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below, and specific functions may change from time to time.

• Handles/manages instruments in the operative field to prevent obstruction of the surgeons’ view or access to the operative areas.
• Provides retraction, hemostasis, knot tying, suturing and places suture ligatures.
• Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedure; has knowledge of surgical preference.
• Knows and follows aseptic/sterile technique.
• Assists in carrying out the patient’s plan of care by performing assigned tasks within scope of practice of the surgical technologists and according to the unit guidelines of care, hospital and nursing policies and procedures, and legal limitations.
• Assist with the maintenance, selection and preparation of instruments, equipment and supplies necessary to maintain a state of readiness for operative cases.
• Fosters guest relations within the team and with patients and families.
• Maintains confidentiality of patient information.
• Supports patients in the practice of their cultural and spiritual beliefs within limits of the medical regimen.
• Adjusts patient care based on the age specific physiological and psychosocial needs of patients typically served.
• Participates in educational and performance improvement activities.
• Performs other task and duties as assigned to meet the patient care and/or unit goals.
  
  

Education and Formal Training: Completion of Surgical Technology Program or equivalent training. Prefer certification from Association of Surgical Technologists. Certification from an approved First Assistant Credentialing Program and endorsed by the Liaison of Surgical Technologists.

Work Experience: Minimum two years experience as Surgical Technologist First Assistant.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required: Work with complex monitoring and life support equipment. Able to perform in cardiac service. Reads, writes, and speaks English. Practice knowledge of standard precautions and sterile technique. Is knowledgeable of age specific physiological/psychosocial/developmental/spiritual needs of patients served. Self directed to learn and achieve unit objectives.
