Summary
Under the direction of the Technical Specialist and Manager, performs specimen processing functions and non-technical duties as assigned. Performs laboratory specimen receiving, processing and distribution of specimens received for microbiology testing. Accessions specimens, processes and sets up specimens for cultures. Performs gram stains, maintenance, orders supplies, and prepare specimens for send out testing as needed. May also be trained to perform moderately complex rapid tests based on education and training.Working knowledge of handling blood/body fluid and other laboratory specimens, according to infection control guidelines preferred. Specimen processing, microbiology background preferred. Knowledge of medical terminology and computer background preferred. Possess skills for accepting responsibility, making decisions, and working as a team. Promote and maintain compatible working relationships among personnel within the section. Ability to operate equipment at sitting or standing levels. Flexibility and adaptability to work additional hours or shifts and under stress. Effective communications skills to include listening, writing, talking and reading. Ability to communicate via telephone, LIS, email and verbally. Excellent customer service skills. Knowledge of laboratory functions, specimen requirements and specimen processing. Indicate the mental and emotional activities required of this job in the course of a normal shift. Handles multiple priorities. Independent decision making and able to make decisions under pressure. Manages stress, anger, fear and hostility. Works alone and with others effectively. Works in close proximately to others or in a distracting environment.Subject to viral and bacterial infections, exposed to blood borne pathogens. Occasional exposure to toxic substances. Visual acuity and above average manual dexterity. Capable of moderate amount of walking, standing, sitting and lifting.
