What are the responsibilities and job description for the Junior-Mid Level Litigation Associate position at Capell Barnett Matalon & Schoenfeld LLP?
The litigation department at the Midtown Manhattan office of Capell Barnett Matalon & Schoenfeld LLP, with twenty plus attorneys and growing, seeks a highly motivated full-time junior/mid-level litigation associate for immediate hire.
All candidates must be admitted in New York and actively practicing for no less than three to five years. Candidates must have experience and a strong desire to practice in wide array of commercial litigation matters as well as commercial and residential real estate/landlord-tenant litigation. Those with primarily negligence, criminal defense, only landlord-tenant court experience, or other practice areas with skills not readily transferable to complex commercial litigation, are discouraged from applying. While we provide an exceptional level of training and mentorship at all levels, this is an intermediate experience level position designed for a qualified candidate who already has a strong foundation and experience in commercial litigation practice, procedure, research, and writing. Exceptional writing skills are a requirement. The hire will be directly supervised by a more senior associate and three partners.
The majority of our litigation is in the New York State Supreme and Appellate Courts, with a significant minority in the Federal Courts, Commercial Civil Part 52, the Housing Parts, Surrogate’s Court, and the Civil and District Courts. A sampling of our case inventory includes matters involving commercial contracts, employment related disputes, corporate shareholder disputes, religious and other not-for-profit corporation litigation including corporate governance matters and the administration and recovery of property occupied by diminishing or rogue congregations of various religious denominations, First Amendment issues involving the Establishment Clause and the justiciability of ecclesiastical disputes in secular courts, debtor-creditor and leasing related class-actions, as well as probate proceedings, leasing, title, easement, adverse possession, partition, mortgage foreclosure, and other real property disputes.
The right candidate will be confident and have excellent interpersonal skills, be a compelling and engaging advocate and writer with strong legal research skills and will have a desire to gain experience in court appearances on motions, hearings and trials. The candidate must also be able to work under pressure and manage deadlines, be comfortable engaging with clients, and maintain the highest levels of ethics and integrity.
We collaborate not only internally but with all other departments, particularly the real estate development, commercial leasing, employment, and corporate practices. Being a team player is a must. We also collaborate and cross-pollinate with the firm’s estate administration, elder law, and tax practices.
The firm offers a competitive salary and benefits and strongly encourages individual growth, all while providing a congenial and nurturing work environment. Salary range for this position will generally be in the $100,000 to $140,000 range plus benefits, commensurate with demonstrated skills and experience as well as verified meaningful references.
Associates receive invaluable experience in various aspects of litigation. We have a thriving practice that litigates a wide variety of interesting and intellectually challenging matters, with opportunities that you won’t normally find in most firms. Salary and future increases will reflect an individual’s capacity to contribute to the firm on a wide range of metrics commensurate with experience, potential, quality of work, ability to work independently, and work ethic.
