Shelter Veterinary Assistant
GENERAL SUMMARY: Assist in a variety of clinic organizational duties including input and maintenance of medical records, animal health care, and maintenance of shelter clinic hygiene.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Contribute to projects that promote clinic efficiency and safety.
· Assist with restraint and medical treatment of shelter animals, as well as staff animals.
· Assist with performing physical exams and veterinary medical exams.
· Enter medical services, diagnostic results, treatment, surgery notes, medications, communications, and other relevant information into medical records and monitoring charts.
· Medicate, organize, and update medication lists for shelter animals.
· Perform routine laboratory duties, i.e., phlebotomy - heartworm and feline leukemia test.
· Perform in house chemistry on Idexx Catalyst One, arranges for courier services and additional tests through Idexx VetConnect Plus.
· Complete diagnostics, such as ear cytologies and fecal flotations.
· Transfer animals from the clinic to the kennels and update information in the computer.
· Maintenance of re-vaccinations, heartworm, and flea/tick prevention on animals in the shelter.
· Maintain a hygienic clinic environment for the animals and medical care treatment. This includes cleaning of shelter clinic kennels, general shelter clinic areas, and deep clean of shelter clinic areas.
· Care for and monitor animals housed in clinic for extended periods of time.
· Communicate with interdepartmental and intradepartmental staff regarding the medical needs of animals and participate in needed tasks for the best interest of CAHS animal within scope of medicated capabilities.
· Stock exam and treatment areas in the clinic.
· Assist in clinic inventory, and checking in new inventory promptly, as well as locating prices for purchased staff items.
· Assist with putting away received supply orders, invoices, and purchase orders.
· Perform other duties assigned, i.e., post-adoption care, surgery, special events.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed at an animal shelter in shared office space. There is potential exposure to zoonotic diseases, dangerous and fractious animals, high noise levels, hazardous chemicals, anesthetics, and sharp objects. Occasional lifting of up to 100#, potential for standing 8 hours a day, animal handling and restraint in a veterinary setting are all required. There is possible exposure of infectious diseases to personal animals. Must be able to handle all sizes and activity levels of animals.
