What are the responsibilities and job description for the Food Services Coordinator position at Capital Area Intermediate Unit?
Salary: $41,840 - $52,300 (depending on experience)
Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8 hours/day, 215 days/year
Job Goal: To ensure that each school child is provided with food of high nutritious quality in an atmosphere of cleanliness, cheerfulness, and personal caring; manage the food service program according to policies and procedures, and federal/state requirements. Provide leadership, support and guidance to ensure that food quality standards, inventory levels, food safety guidelines, and customer service expectations are met. Maintain records, participate in menu planning, manage equipment to make certain it is running properly and safely, plan for the purchase of food and supplies, and assist in preparation and serving of food.
Performance Responsibilities:
1. Oversee and supervise the food services staff and conduct position searches when necessary.
2. Oversee the development of food menus in accordance with the National School Lunch & Breakfast Program guidelines, including meal plans for students with special needs, which adhere to the needs of the students and the requirements of the PA Department of Education.
3. Oversee and monitor the purchasing of food products and approve invoices for payment.
4. Develop, implement, and monitor procedures to ensure food is prepared and served in a sanitary and safe environment in conformance with all State, federal and local laws and regulations ; develop, implement, and monitor general food service policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all State, federal and local laws and regulations related to providing food services to students, employees and the public.
5. Perform onsite Program reviews as required.
6. Develop and maintain strong working knowledge of State food service reporting systems and regulations.
7. Gather, input, maintain, and ensure the accuracy of food services related information, such as, but not limited to recipes, menus, and production records into the food service software package.
8. In conjunction with the business office, prepare and submit reports as required by State and federal agencies, including monthly PA Department of Education reports, workday records and attendance records.
9. Maintain the Point of Sale (POS) system.
10. In conjunction with the business office, assist in the preparation of food service budgets and monitor revenue and expense to budget on a continuing basis.
11. Participate in the student wellness committee and assist with drafting of policies that concern food services.
12. Communicate effectively with school staff, parents, and students regarding the quality of, and satisfaction with, the food services program, and conduct periodic satisfaction surveys.
13. Meet with and communicate with vendors to review potential products and services as necessary.
14. Plan and implement training, technical assistance, and professional development for food services staff.
15. Conduct annual evaluation of direct reporting employees and develop and monitor related staff development plan; substitute for and work on site with food services staff as necessary.
16. Supervise and instruct food service staff in the safe and efficient use of all kitchen equipment.
17. Supervise and participate in the overall preparation and serving of all food in the cafeteria.
18. Assign tasks to food service staff and follow-up to ensure they have been accomplished.
19. Order and maintain food inventory; check food shipments into the school and sign invoice(s) after order has been verified.
20. Determine the quantities of food to be prepared daily; complete and maintain production records as established by the National School Breakfast and Lunch Programs.
21. Oversee the preparation of special diet meals.
22. Perform daily start-up/opening and closing tasks such as unlocking kitchen doors, freezer, refrigerators, etc., and locking doors and make certain equipment is turned off at the close of each day.
23. Rotate stock and organize freezers, refrigerators, and storerooms with the assistance of other food service staff.
24. Count and verify school food service-related money, prepare daily and/or weekly cash-meal logs and bank deposits, and submit to the business office.
25. Maintain voucher list of students charging lunch meals.
26. Annually update and follow all established Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Points (HACCP) procedures and ensure that Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are followed and maintained by food service staff.
27. Ensure the kitchen is cleaned daily and unused food is stored or disposed of properly; observe, maintain, and enforce the utmost standards of hygiene and cleanliness.
28. Attend job-related training classes and workshops as deemed appropriate by the Principal/Supervisor, Hill Top Academy.
29. Oversee the vocational education students working in the kitchen and work with their job coaches to ensure the success of the program.
30. Schedule routine maintenance of kitchen equipment.
31. Assume any other responsibilities as assigned by the Principal/Supervisor, Hill Top Academy or his/her designee.

Qualifications:
1. High School Diploma or GED
2. Knowledge of school food service with an understanding of nutrition, sanitation, and food safety.
3. Have or be able to obtain Servsafe Certification, as well as any other certifications that may be required for school food service.
4. Knowledge of USDA guidelines and application at a local level.
5. Friendly and personable; able to work with students with special needs.
6. Strong interpersonal, decision-making, and leadership skills.
7. Proficient computer skills (Microsoft) required; basic accounting skills preferred.
8. Minimum of two years of experience in commercial and/or institutional food preparation and management.
