Position Overview:
As an Assistant Teacher at Capital Day School, you will play a supportive role in nurturing the intellectual, emotional, and social development of young learners in our primary classrooms. You will collaborate with the lead teacher to create a warm, engaging, and structured environment that encourages curiosity, independence, and positive social interactions.
Your role will include assisting with daily routines, classroom management, and individualized instruction. You will help maintain a clean, organized, and safe learning environment while fostering a sense of community among students.
Key Responsibilities:
Classroom Support:
- Assist the lead teacher in preparing and implementing daily lessons and activities.
- Support the lead teacher in managing classroom routines, transitions, and group activities.
- Help maintain a well-organized, child-friendly classroom that encourages exploration and independence.
- Provide one-on-one or small group support as directed by the lead teacher.
Student Engagement:
- Engage with students during activities, guiding them through tasks with encouragement and positive reinforcement.
- Model respectful and kind behavior, helping students develop social-emotional skills.
- Foster a safe and nurturing environment where all children feel valued and supported.
- Observe students and share insights with the lead teacher to support individualized instruction.
Classroom Management:
- Uphold clear and consistent expectations for behavior and cooperation, as set by the lead teacher.
- Monitor students during independent work, play, and transitions, providing guidance as needed.
- Assist in resolving minor conflicts with empathy and respect, promoting positive communication among peers.
- Support the lead teacher in implementing strategies to maintain a calm and productive classroom environment.
Administrative and Organizational Tasks:
- Assist with classroom setup and clean-up, maintaining a tidy and safe space.
- Prepare materials and resources needed for lessons and activities.
- Help with record-keeping, documenting observations as directed by the lead teacher.
- Support the lead teacher in preparing progress reports and organizing student portfolios.
Communication and Collaboration:
- Communicate effectively with the lead teacher, sharing observations and discussing strategies to support students.
- Build positive relationships with students, parents, and staff, fostering a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere.
- Participate in parent-teacher conferences and school events as requested.
- Be responsive to feedback and open to professional growth opportunities.

Qualifications:

- Experience working with young children, preferably in an educational setting.
- Familiarity with child development principles and classroom management techniques.
- Interest in early childhood education and willingness to learn more about best practices.
- CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a teaching team.
