Position Overview:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Works closely with genetic counselors, medical director of the Cancer Genetics Program and Director of the Cancer Center to facilitate daily operations
- Performs patient intake and scheduling for genetic counseling and testing.
- Prepares draft of family pedigree through Progeny Software.
- Assists with obtaining and entering relevant medical and laboratory records related to the genetic counseling process .
- Completes Genetic Testing requisition forms with relevant data needed.
- Keeps abreast of insurance related issues and performs pre-authorizations and benefit investigations through major labs (eg. LabCorp, Myriad, Ambry).
- Maintains strong dialogue with labs, patients, and genetic counselors to resolve issues and ensures timely turnover of results. Assists with genetic testing process by contacting genetic testing laboratories regarding sample availability, sample requirements, test costs, and other relevant information. Maintains testing log.
- Ensures appropriate stock of test kits and patient educational information.
- Works with Genetic Counselors and other clinical providers to draft letters of medical necessity and genetic counseling/ testing consultation letters for genetic testing.
- Enters demographic and results data into the program’s Excel spreadsheets.
- Scans paper charts into EMR system.
- Assists in community educational events.
- Participates in performance improvement projects.
- Performs other tasks as needed .
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Education: High School Diploma or equivalent. College level genetics course. Understanding of medical terminology.
- Experience: One year related experience preferred.
- Knowledge and Skills: Good organizational, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills.
- Special Training: Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Power Point) and working with databases.
- Mental, Behavioral and Emotional Abilities: Ability to take direction.
