Definition
This position is responsible for operating equipment associated with the maintenance of streets, sewers, and buildings in various locations throughout the City of Harrisburg. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Field Supervisor - Streets, Department Director, or designee.
Work is performed on streets, right of ways, buildings, and sewers in various locations throughout the City. Work involves the use of motor vehicles and equipment such as dump trucks, street sweepers, vacuuming equipment, snowplows, air compressors, and other associated equipment. Employees are subject to noise and vibration, fumes, odors, dust, poor ventilation, and inclement weather. Safety equipment such as gas detectors, harness, tripod, cones, traffic barricades, handheld flags, etc. are used. Duties typically are performed weekdays 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., but City street sweeping schedules require hours of 4:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. four days per month. Employee may work nights, weekends, and holidays as required.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Proficiency in operating specialized vehicles and equipment, such as snow plows, fork lifts, salt spreaders and skid steers.
- Ability to use considerable skill in manipulating and operating all equipment.
- Ability to operate equipment within all safety regulations.
- Ability to use tools required to perform daily and preventative maintenance, and minor repairs of the vehicles and equipment being operated.
- Working knowledge of vehicle and standard equipment maintenance.
- Ability to understand and follow instructions.
- Ability to comprehend operator’s manuals for all types of equipment and special attachments.
- Ability to perform manual work involving extensive walking and strenuous physical activity for prolonged periods, often under adverse weather and working conditions.
- Knowledge of safe operating practices and traffic safety regulations.
- Ability to react quickly and appropriately to alarms and hazardous situations.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- A valid Pennsylvania Driver's License, Class C.
