Operations Manager
CWS is a leading provider of waste management services throughout South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Virginia, and Florida. We are currently looking for an Operations Manager for Columbia, SC location.
POSITION SUMMARY for Operations Manager
Manage, guide and train departmental supervisors and administrative staff to provide safe, effective, and consistent waste collection service to customers. The Operations Manager is the front-line representative responsible for guiding and supporting supervisors, administrative staff, drivers, loaders, and maintenance department while providing oversight of departmental goals at the direction of the General Manager and/or Chief Operations Officer
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Maintain company standards for employee work attire and personal protective equipment
- Provide leadership resulting in positive employee relations and a professional corporate image
- Ensure fair and consistent treatment of all personnel through management and enforcement of current company policies and governmental regulations
- Establish and maintain operational standards to meet customer service commitments
- Recruit, interview, hire and train employees to ensure effectiveness and productivity
- Plan, direct and modify collection and disposal services to best utilize personnel and equipment while protecting and preserving business assets
- Manage through performance evaluation, provide coaching and training, implement corrective action or progressive discipline when needed. Conduct an annual review on each employee's job performance and approve any changes to an employee's compensation
- Manage other business or personnel related issues including interaction with internal and external customers as well as local or state level municipal government employees
- Collaborate with the General Manager and departmental supervisors to develop short and long term, work schedules to match staffing and equipment levels
- Coordinate with the Maintenance department to address concerns and/or changes to vehicle repairs and ensure fleet availability is sufficient to complete daily service routes
- Respond timely, effectively, and courteously to customer inquiries, special requests and/or complaints and provide prompt resolution of all customer matters
- Design, schedule and oversee periodic route audits to ensure safety and efficiency
- Promote an effective safety program that seeks to prevent accidents, injuries, and property damage while recognizing and rewarding safe employees
- Schedule, plan, and conduct safety meetings at regular intervals as determined by senior leadership or specific happenings
- Complete employee observations to evaluate behaviors and adherence to company safety, operational and general employment policies. Identify skill improvement opportunities, while providing positive feedback, coaching, and training
- Respond to reports of problems associated with customer service points such as unsafe conditions, potentially hazardous waste streams, or situations
- Coordinate with Accounts Receivable, Customer Service and Sales departments to address concerns and/or changes in customer service levels
- Ensure accuracy of completed route sheets and logged employee work hours for pay calculations, including incentives, paid time off and/or adjustments
- Review for accuracy, and maintain driver logs and other records as required by local, state, and federal transportation or other regulatory agencies
- Assist in investigation of company involved vehicle accidents, employee injuries or property damage claims
- Assist in development and execution of an operational profit plan that includes revenue growth and retention, cost of operations, capital requirements and personnel needs
- In conjunction with General Manager, manage the operating budget to ensure targets are met
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by management
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Proven leadership and communication skills
- Ability to manage municipal contracts and ensure compliance with specifications
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of personnel, customers, vendors, and other business partners
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must
- Knowledge of DOT, OSHA and other regulations related to commercial driving and waste collection
- Basic mechanical knowledge and understanding of commercial and industrial vehicles
EDUCATION, TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSING/CERTIFICATION:
Education and Experience: BA or BS Degree desired. High School Diploma/GED and equivalent experience may also be considered. Minimum two (2) years of related municipal waste or transportation industry experience required. Must have previous supervisory or management experience. Must be able to Pass DOT physical, drug screen and motor vehicle record check
Certifications: Successful candidate will preferably hold a Valid Class A or B CDL with air brake endorsement. OSHA, other safety training, or Smith System Driver Training certification is a plus. Must meet all regulatory requirements to qualify to operate equipment supervised
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Occasional exposure to extreme weather conditions
- May be exposed to chemicals, solvents, dusts, biohazardous materials or wastes, and other household, commercial or industrial refuse in around collection vehicles and/or containers
- Other risks associated with working around machines, tools, trucks, and heavy equipment
- Occasional travel may be required
TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to safely operate all types of passenger and commercial trucks
- Ability to organize various office systems through adjusting, connecting, lifting, pulling, pushing, bending, or folding for the purpose of proper records development and/or management
- Ability to use a computer and related devices, such as keyboard, mouse, or other related equipment, throughout the workday while seated at a desk, workstation, or remote in-vehicle connection
