General Summary

Responsible for reporting, installing, maintaining, repairing, and calibrating of controlling instruments used throughout the cement making process. The E&I technician is a well-rounded professional able to work on both sides of the instrumentation and electrical field.

Principal Duties and Accountabilities (Essential Functions)

  • Installs, repairs, maintains, and adjusts indicating, recording, and controlling instruments used in production.
  • Disassembles malfunctioning instruments, examines, and tests mechanisms and circuitry for defects.
  • Troubleshoots equipment in or out of control system and replaces or repairs defective parts.  Reassembles instruments and tests assembly for conformance with specifications.
  • Keeps documentation up to date on checklists and required documentation for environmental compliance.
  • Inspects instruments as scheduled and makes minor calibration adjustments to ensure they are functioning within specified standards.  Coordinates and communicates with the control room daily.
  • Monitors, builds, and implements new logic programs in the control scheme of plant equipment.
  • Assists the lead in scheduling and performing preventative maintenance on plant equipment. 
  • Maintains work orders, repair records, troubleshooting assignment sheets, parts replacement log, purchase requests and blueprints.
  • Works directly with the electrical supervisor to complete assigned work orders and maintains the work order system up to date.
  • Responsible for completing area audits.
  • Maintains work area and equipment in a safe and clean condition at all times.
  • Responsible for abiding by and support all company and plant safety policies, rules and procedures as well as M.S.H.A regulations.

Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 2 years practical working experience in instrument electronics.
  • PLC programming experience desired, but not required.
  • Background in instrument mechanics in cement industry is preferred, but not required.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Must be proficient at Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Must be proficient in using test instruments, meters, calibrators, and scopes.
  •  Ability to troubleshoot all electrical plant equipment such as low and medium voltage switchgear, electric motors, AC and DC control circuits interfaced with PLC’s.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and set up variable frequency drives.
  • Ability to understand and follow basic ladder diagrams and ladder logic.
  • Understanding of pneumatic and hydraulic valves and circuits.
  • Ability to perform electrical construction tasks such as pipe bending and treading, cable runs and basic installations compliant with NEC.
  • Able to perform minor mechanical repairs and or adjustments.
  • Ability to work on a stand-by or on-call basis.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and solve technical problems relating to calibrating and repairing instruments.
  • Ability to listen and understand information presented through spoken words.
  • Ability to communicate information in speaking.
  • Ability to read and understand information presented in writing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively using appropriate interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to supervise own work and be self-motivated.
  • Ability to abide by company safety policies and procedures and to work safely within a fast-paced environment.
