Position Overview
QC Technician performs a variety of tests on raw materials and finished products during the manufacturing process of cement to monitor compliance with standards established by the American Society for Testing and Materials and internal standards set forth by Capitol Cement. The position requires that the technician demonstrates the ability to perform all pertinent tests and interpret data to maintain all chemical or physical properties within specification limits.
Principal Duties and Accountabilities (Essential Functions)
- Analyzes samples of raw material and finished products obtained on a scheduled basis to monitor compliance with the American Society for Testing and Materials or internal standards set forth by Capitol Cement.
- Obtains samples of various raw materials and finished products throughout the cement manufacturing process in a systematic and prescribed manner.
- Prepares samples for chemical or physical analyses as established by standard operating procedures of Capitol Cement.
- Documents and communicate all data to appropriate departments using verbal written or electronic methods.
- Performs analyses of solid fuel (petroleum coke and coal) for percent ash, percent moisture, percent fixed carbon and percent volatile matter.
- Performs an Adiabatic Paar Bomb Calorimetry test to determine the heat value of the solid fuel used in fueling of cement kilns.
- Performs particle size determination on various raw or finished products.
- Performs chemical analysis of gypsum and other materials that are used in the cement manufacturing process.
- Acts as liaison between the solid fuel supplier and Capitol to maintain an adequate and continuous supply of solid fuel.
- Performs thickening time tests during the production of Class A or Class H cements to monitor compliance of well cements to the standards set forth by the American Petroleum Institute. Chemistry, Thickening, Time, Free Fluid, and Strength Development.
- Performs a variety of tests on Class H cement using retarders and other additives supplied by the cementing servicing companies. These tests are requested by the service companies to monitor the consistency of the Class H cement rheological properties from grind to grind.
- Performs drift check on X-ray unit on an established time interval. Calibrates the unit with various standards to generate new methods for analysis of materials that require different chemical oxide concentrations.
- Certifies the X-ray unit by complying with the procedure set for in ASTM C-114.
- Performs physical tests according to ASTM standards on daily finish mill composite samples of Type I, Type II, Type III, and Masonry. Tests include but not limited to strength development, setting times, normal consistency, percent flow, air contest, false set, and water retention.
- Performs strength development tests and chemical analysis on grab samples taken from bulk transport trucks according to ASTM C-917.
- Performs physical tests according to ASTM standards on competitive samples, field samples and the periodic samples submitted by the Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory.
- Documents and communicates data to appropriate personnel by verbal written or electronic methods. Responsible for preparing and maintaining records that are pertinent to area of responsibility. Prepares monthly graphs and calculates standard deviation of strength development for different types of cement.
- Must train, mentor and give direction to QC Tech I and QC Tech II.
- Responsible for completing area audits.
- Always maintains work area and equipment in a safe and clean condition.
- Responsible for abiding by and supporting all company and plant safety policies, rules and procedures as well as M.S.H.A regulations.

Education & Experience
- Successful completion of high school or GED certificate is preferred.
- Previous experience in cement making is required.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Quality Control Tech II and/or Tech I.
Other Qualifications
- Must be able to understand and follow written and verbal instructions to read, understand and obey all safety rules and regulations, equipment operating instructions and danger notices.
- Must exercise great care in traffic and on-site movements of equipment/vehicles.
- Requires an ability to make decisions and demonstrate skill in operating and maintaining lab equipment and operating vehicles while loading materials, backing up, turning corners and negotiating plant roads. Requires the ability to react calmly in emergency situations.
- Must demonstrate commitment to the safety of all persons and property by abiding by all safety rules and regulations as needed.
