POSITION SUMMARY:
The Dean of Graduate School at Capitol Technology University is the administrative officer responsible for the leadership and the effective and efficient operation of graduate academic programs within the university. The Dean of Graduate School will establish and maintain a collegial work climate, cooperatively leading the academic unit toward improved productivity and relevancy while promoting the highest quality educational programs and research. The Dean provides academic leadership for ensuring enrollment growth at Masters and Doctoral level programs. The successful candidate will be committed to developing and implementing innovative educational pathways which support the needs of professionals in fields shaped by technology.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Academic Leadership and Administration
- Provide overall leadership, direction, advocacy, communication, coordination, and assessment of the Graduate School and all its academic programs as well as any the sub-units (programs) within it;
- Provide leadership and supervision for team members assigned to the Graduate School;
- Work cooperatively with the Vice President of Academic Affairs to establish and monitor annual budgets that enhance and support the mission of the academic unit;
- Ensure all procedures fundamentally protect and enhance the unit's academic integrity, by focusing the core functions on its essential academic mission;
- Ensure all necessary and relevant activities that promote proper unit accreditation are completed;
- Ensure Graduate School compliance with academic and university policy and procedure;
- Work with the Vice President of Academic Affairs to develop a coherent, realistic academic plan that advances the mission of the academic unit and supports the mission of the university;
- Work with VP Enrollment and VP Student Success to establish systems and processes to meet retention and enrollment goals.
- Direct and coordinate the creation and implementation of the university’s class offerings and class schedule for publication in the university catalog and semester schedule of classes;
- Collaborate with the online learning team to support communication and workflow between teams for efficient Canvas course creation and upkeep;
- Utilize data in decision making and ensure graduate team members have the data and training needed to make data-informed decisions;
- Support university plans for improving student recruitment and retention, including articulation and other cooperative agreements with external partners;
- Ensure that faculty and student grievances are correctly evaluated and processed, decisions are rendered by the academic unit in a timely manner, and support the appeals process, when appropriate;
- Lead the development and execution of Residencies conducted to serve Graduate programs;
- Work with VPAA to facilitate IRB, ARB, and final dissertation process and approval;
- Facilitate doctoral dissertation defenses or designate a facilitator;
Personnel Leadership
- Lead the Graduate School team to identify, recruit, supervise, and routinely evaluate all faculty (FT and PT), staff, and chairs working within the Graduate School;
- Coordinate all personnel searches for the academic unit, ensuring that expertise and diversity goals for faculty are pursued;
- Ensure completion of systematic and routine written evaluations of faculty and staff in keeping with university policies and procedures;
- Engage in mentoring of faculty and staff that maintains morale, rewards and fosters competence and effort, and deals effectively with problems and issues that decrease faculty and staff performance;
- Use the promotion process to create an atmosphere of growth;
- Create and implement a faculty professional development plan that contains a systematic design to improve classroom teaching skills, encourage appropriate academic pursuits, and increase personal professional growth;
- Recommend to the VPAA all appropriate personnel actions (e.g., appointment, reappointment, promotion, leave, involuntary dismissal, transfer, resignation and sabbatical) when those actions require a higher level of decision authority;
- Serve as the mediator in resolving problems arising among faculty, department chairs, program directors, other university staff, and students;
- Ensure scope and coverage of the curricula, working towards full utilization of faculty expertise in its delivery;
- Work cooperatively with the administration and faculty to develop relevant degree and certification programs that support the mission of the university;
- Lead the academic unit in a manner that supports innovation and growth.
Student Support
- Ensure the provision of accurate and timely academic advising to all students in their respective degrees;
- Ensure a system of student observation that occurs systematically, fairly and regularly;
- Establish a formal and informal communication network so that regular student feedback occurs within each program;
- Continuously improve student recruitment and retention within the unit;
Professional and Community Relations
- Work with the VPAA to establish and maintain a functional and effective industrial advisory board involving the major constituencies served by the academic unit;
- Support business development and fundraising activities for the university when appropriate.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- Doctorate degree and minimum of ten years teaching experience required;
- Five years’ progressive leadership experience in a higher education setting where master’s and doctoral programs were delivered at a distance;
- Five years’ experience leading and supervising remote faculty (FT, PT, content, dissertation chairs and committee members) serving in doctoral and master’s programs;
- Demonstrated experience developing and administering a faculty evaluation procedure/protocol in an online doctoral and master’s programs delivery setting;
- Demonstrated experience in regional accreditation preparation, planning, and compliance assurance;
- Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing curriculum and curriculum development/revision protocols in an online delivery format for master’s and doctoral programs;
- Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing assessment protocols in an online delivery format for master’s and doctoral programs;
- Extensive experience as chair or committee member for dissertations;
- Effective interpersonal and organizational skills and supervisory experience;
- Experience working with SIS and LMS to design, deliver, and assess the student experience, specific Jenzabar and Canvas experience preferred;
- Experience working in a fast-paced academic setting;
- Conflict management, customer service, and hiring.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: There are limited physical demands; however, this position requires sitting and occasionally for extended periods of time, and repetitive motions for tasks such as operating a computer mouse and keyboard, and hearing and speaking on the telephone. The candidate must be able to lift, pull, bend, grasp, and occasionally lift up to 20 lbs.
