Job Title: Area Coordinator 

Location: The First Year Residence Halls at Marshall University

Reports To: Assistant Director of Residence Life 

Salary: $41,000.00-$43,000.00 per year, on-site staff apartment, parking pass and benefits package

FLSA Status: Exempt

 

 

The First Year Residence Halls (FY North and FY South) is seeking a Residence Director to join our team. Both buildings are located on the campus at Marshall University in Huntington, WV. Our facilities house over 700 Marshall University students. The Area Coordinator’s position is to manage, supervise, educate, develop, and maintain the security of the students and staff within a residential community. This position should also be continuously analyzing and assessing the needs of the staff and students in their community.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee two residence halls with total occupancy of 782 residents.
  • Supervises 22 Resident Advisors and conducts individual meetings, bi-annual evaluations.
  • Attends and organizes weekly staff meetings.
  • Attends and participates in weekly residence life staff meetings. 
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of Resident Advisor selection process.
  • Handles selection of Resident Advisor staff for first year buildings.
  • Assists with coordination of fall & spring training as well as ongoing personal and professional staff development opportunities.
  • Follows up with Resident Advisor disciplinary concerns.
  • Partners with Assistant Director of Academic Initiatives and Assistant Director of Residence Life for the First Year Residence halls to Implement and manage residential curriculum and learning outcomes.
  • Coordinates the purchasing of items for programming initiatives. 
  • Create and promote conducive environment for student learning, academic success, and personal development of all residents.
  • Work with Assistant Director of Residence Life to assess effectiveness of the hall initiatives & learning outcomes. 
  • Promote an atmosphere that emphasizes Marshall’s values (academic achievement, personal freedom & integrity, dignity and respect for the individual, diversity and inclusiveness, sustainability, and service).
  • Participates in planning, facilitation, and implementation of department academic initiatives. 
  • Provides support, resources and follow-up to residents who are identified as having academic concerns.
  • Hear, adjudicate, and mediate student conduct and student wellness issues.
  • Documents and maintains records of student conduct incidents and wellness issues and provides updates to supervision and campus partners as needed. 
  • Utilizes hall camera systems to investigate residence hall/student conduct violations.
  • Maintain daily office hours & a high degree of availability and visibility for all residents.
  • Ensure maintenance problems are reported.
  • Be a resource to students and make referrals when needed.
  • Act in accordance with allotted budgets.
  • Coordinates staff for resident health and safety room inspections.
  • Conduct roommate mediations and coordinate room changes as necessary.
  • Oversees First Year Residence Hall living learning communities.
  • Works with campus partners to coordinate living learning community initiatives.

Crisis/ Emergency Management:

  • Participate in a weekly on-call rotation for entire on-campus community.
  • Respond to emergency calls by assessing the situation and determining the best course of action. 
  • Documents all incidents according to policy.
  • Provides appropriate next-day resident follow-up information for major crises/emergencies.

Department Initiatives: 

  • Participate in department initiatives such as strategic planning, retention initiatives, housing sign up, Week of Welcome, Opening and Closing of residence halls.
  • Work collaboratively with others in the university, division, and Student Affairs.
  • Enforce University and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in student affairs, higher education administration, or related fields.
  • Two years of relevant professional work experience in Housing and Residence Life.
  • Demonstrate understanding and strong commitment to customer service.
  • Display strong interpersonal written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively work and interact respectfully within a diverse and inclusive environment.
  • Demonstrate leadership and supervisory abilities.
  • Ability to live in the residence hall apartment 12 months per year.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision.
