Summary
Resident Assistants (RAs) are the face of Edgewood Commons and work collaboratively with the Residence Life Office. They are undergraduate or graduate students who live in the residence halls. The main priorities of the RA role are to build community and to support students’ academic and personal success. RAs are responsible for informing residents of the various rules and regulations as well as providing information concerning University resources and programs.
Responsibilities:
- Through interest in self-growth, serve as a role model for other students both academically and socially.
- Provide programming for the residents to assist in their educational and social development.
- Support and assist the Hall Councils.
- Be familiar with, support and uphold the regulations, policies and procedures of the University and be able to explain them to students.
- Serve as a peer support, making appropriate referrals to other offices and/or agencies for students needing specialized assistance.
- Assist residents in recognizing the role they play within their community and foster their understanding of individual differences.
- Encourage responsibility for one's actions.
- Attend all required trainings including fall training and spring training at the beginning of every term.
Developmental Responsibilities:
- Develop a personal schedule that maintains perspective and emphasizes your academic work first, your RA responsibilities second, and your social and special interests third.
- Participate in staff training prior to the beginning of the academic year and after winter break, as well as All Department meetings during the school year.
- Develop one's identity as part of the Residence Life Office & Edgewood Commons staff, sharing responsibilities, ideas and approaches with the team and supporting one another's efforts whenever and wherever possible.
- Attend weekly meetings and 1-on-1 meetings with your supervisor and RA staff members.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Participate in "on-duty" functions including but not limited to rounds, building and office hours during duty shifts.
- Assist with the opening and closing of your residence hall before and following all breaks and at the end of each semester.
- Disseminate and post information and give clarification and rationale when appropriate.
- Be familiar with emergency procedures and respond positively in situations related to the safety of the residents.
- Report maintenance repair requests and damages through the University work order system in a timely manner.
- Complete room condition reports prior to opening and at closing of the halls and in conjunction with room changes during the year.
- Participate in Residence Life Office & Edgewood Commons functions such as room selection, room changes, etc.
- Support and assist Edgewood Commons in scheduled move-in and move-out days.
Administrative Duties:
- See that signs are made and posted to communicate information to residents.
- Conduct floor/wing meetings.
- Seek suggestions/input from residents as well as other staff members.
- Inform your supervisor of all hall/floor/wing business.
- Complete Occupancy Reports
- Complete a 3.5-hour front desk shift each week on weekdays (Monday-Thursday).
- Participate in Edgewood marketing events such as FSU Preview days, Open Housing, Welcome Session, Interest events, etc.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:

- High school diploma.
- Current student at Frostburg State University.
- Maintain full-time enrollment and “good standing” with Frostburg State University.
- Demonstrate proficiency in verbal communication.
- Possess strong customer service skills.
- Must have troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.

Resident Assistants receive an assigned room within the Edgewood Commons community and a meal plan for the duration of their employment (fall and spring semesters, excluding break periods). In exchange, they are responsible for carrying out the duties and responsibilities outlined above. Additionally, RAs have the opportunity to work weekend front desk shifts (Friday–Sunday), which are paid at a rate of $15.00 per hour for 5 hour shift.
