Description

Cardinal Point Captains, Inc. (CPC) is seeking an experienced and well-qualified deckhand / deck mate to provide vessel support to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory (GLERL) in Michigan. GLERL operates and maintains numerous small boats, ranging in size from 12’ to 85’, to conduct scientific research, biological monitoring, oceanographic monitoring, exploration, and geophysical surveys in the Great Lakes.


CPC is looking for a deckhand with experience in offshore marine environments to help maintain and operate the research vessels needed to conduct scientific research. 


CPC has some flexibility in which city in Michigan you live in. Ideal job locations include Muskegon, Monroe, or Bay City, Michigan. 


Operating, overseeing, and/or assisting in vessel operations.

  • Assisting embarked science party with offshore sampling operations and helping to maintain on deck safety protocols.
  • Assisting with regular vessel maintenance, preventative maintenance, and light repairs such as boat checks, fueling, vessel logs, fluid changes, cleaning and more.
  • Ensure vessels are maintained in accordance with the NOAA Small Boat Program requirements.
  • Properly mobilize the vessel before each cruise, including cleaning, stocking provisions, and scientific equipment.
  • Assist with scientific equipment and buoy deployment and recovery.
  • Adhering to established procedures and NOAA safety programs including but not limited to NOAA Administrative Order 209-125 and the NOAA small boat operations manual.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of vessel deck management experience in offshore marine environments.
  • Experience in load handling equipment such as winches, cranes, A-Frames, and davits.
  • Able to complete all program requirements for OIC of Class II boats (on-job-training will be provided).
  • Proven track record of punctuality and professionalism. 
  • Ability to work collegially with scientists, natural resources managers, and educators.
  • Able to lift and carry equipment up to 75 lbs. 
  • Able to travel on overnight trips up to 5 - 7 days at a time.
  • Able to adjust to changes in schedule due to weather conditions and/or emergency operations.
  • Current first Aid, CPR and AED certifications.
  • Note: Vessels mentioned above are non-smoking vessels.
