High School English Teacher

Cardinal Spellman High School is the premier co-educational, college preparatory, Catholic High School in the New York Metropolitan Area. We are seeking to employ a full-time English teacher for the 2025 -2026 school year.

The ideal candidate is a motivating and engaging teacher who is committed to serving a diversity of learners in an academically rigorous environment. While demonstrating a passion for teaching English, the candidate will help students develop reading, writing, vocabulary, grammar and research skills and apply these skills to their assignments and everyday activities. The candidate will also help students think critically and independently and develop confidence in their own abilities as they build their skills as readers, writers and learners. A commitment to inspiring students to appreciate the world of literature and language and to be lifelong learners is key.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Plan, prepare and deliver lesson plans and instructional materials that facilitate active learning

• Develop and use a variety of assessments (e.g., exams, written work, and public performances) that frequently measure student progress

• Maintain an organized classroom environment that facilitates learning

• Ensure that students master grade-level standards

• Communicate and maintain high academic expectations for all students

Other Professional Responsibilities:

• Actively participate in department and school-wide meetings, collaborative planning, and professional development

• Participate in teacher-parent conferences regarding students’ progress or concerns

• Perform supervisory duties such as homeroom, hall, and cafeteria

• Assist with class coverages

• Actively participate in opportunities to strengthen pedagogical skills

• Communicate and collaborate effectively with colleagues, families, and students

• Use data and assessments to inform and drive instruction

• Pursue their own self-discovery and growth

Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree with at least 2 years teaching experience preferred

• New York State certification preferred

• Excellent oral and written communication skills

• Demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion

• Energy, enthusiasm, and curiosity – willingness to be a fellow learner with students
