Description

General Summary of duties:  Responsible for daily physician support of patient care in outpatient and inpatient setting.  Participates in performance improvement and enhancement activities.   Provides educational support to the nursing staff as it relates to cardiac, thoracic and vascular surgical services.   Provides mentorship regarding physician assistant services for the nursing staff.

Typical Physical Demands:  Requires standing for long periods of time.  Lifting from floor to waist of up to 30 pounds.  Must be able to lift waist to shoulder up to 10 pounds.  Must be able to carry up to 30 pounds with both hands or single hand up to 20 pounds.  Must be able to push up to 100 pounds and pull to up 50 pounds. Frequent horizontal and overhead reaching.  Occasional lifting from shoulder to overhead of up to 10 pounds. Must have good eye/hand/foot control for operation of equipment.

Typical Working Conditions:  Work is conducted in the surgical services department of assigned medical facility as well as the relevant hospital floors.  Clinic hours are conducted in private practice office. On call hours take place in office, hospital and home setting

Duties consist of:

1. Provide first assistant services to physician during Cardiac and Thoracic Surgical Procedures.

2. Assist surgeon in making hospital rounds daily and on call weekends.

3. Assist surgeon in clinic office hours evaluating new consults and post operative patients.

4. Maintain skill and knowledge necessary to provide patient care.

5. Take medical histories, examine and treat patients, order and interpret laboratory tests and x-rays and make diagnosis.

6. Provide preoperative and post operative care.

7. Return calls to home health agencies, hospital staff and patient as needed.

8. Complete case specific paperwork for submission to hospital/medical office as required

9. Provide call and stand-by coverage as assigned

10. Must be able to work in a fast paced environment under urgent and or emergency situations.

11. Provide educational support as needed

12. Other duties as assigned by supervising physician


Requirements

Performance Requirements:  Excellent communication and decision making skills.  Highly organized and self-directed.  Knowledgeable of  medical specialty and equipment.  Knowledgeable of legal, safety, risk and regulatory standards.  Knowledgeable of hospital policies and procedures.   Must be able to work independently.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and general public.

Education:  Degree from accredited Physician Assistant Program

Experience:  Successful completion of an Accredited nationally certified and state licensed to practice medicine with the supervision of a physician.  At least two years of experience. Cardiothoracic experience preferred but not required.

Certificate/license requirements:  Completion of an Accredited Physician Assistant Program.  Physician Assistant License in the State of Florida
