What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Technician position at Cardiovascular Institute South?
Nature of Duties:
The nature of the duties is to assist the nurses and physicians by providing direct patient care in areas of patient mobility, diagnostic testing and general support. Performs technical duties to assist the patients through diagnostic testing to assist nurses in maintenance of healthcare delivery standards. Treats patients in a caring warm professional manner. Assisting Nuclear Medicine Technicians with nuclear patients and assisting the floor nursing staff as needed. Cooperates with all team leaders and co-workers.
Qualifications:
1. High school diploma.
2. Experience and/or training as a medical technician or medical assistance is desired.
3. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Specific Duties:
1. Performs Exercise Treadmill Tests (ETT). Explains the procedure to the patient. Preps the patient (shaving and connecting electrodes), obtains the patient’s signature on the consent form, operates both Marquette ETT machines, obtains EKG printouts and needed documentation.
2. Draws blood (veni-puncture and finger-sticks PT). Correctly fills out the lab requisition forms completely and with proper ICD-9 codes.
3. Performs Electrocardiograms or EKGs. Explains the procedure to the patient. Operates all EKG machines.
4. Applies holter monitors (HM) or event monitors and explains the purpose of the procedure, and instructions for wearing and care of machine to the patient. Able to run the tape in the scanner and communicate to the CIS Holter Technician by computer and/or phone. Also cleans and maintains holter monitors.
5. Operates, calibrates and maintains the PT machine. Performs calibrations and runs the controls twice daily. Checks the refrigerator temperature daily.
6. Performs the weekly OSHA checklist.
7. Completes weekly stocking of supplies in exam rooms, nuclear prep, ETT prep, and cleans patient rooms weekly which includes wiping down counter tops in the prep rooms.
8. Assist nurses by moving patients to test areas, assisting patients with mobility, helping admit patients, assisting patients from the car into wheelchairs when needed, and occasionally bringing patients to the hospital in a wheelchair.
9. Assist the nuclear department with the Adenosine and Perfusion Stress Test.
10. Performs other related duties as assigned and serves in whatever other capacity deemed necessary for successful completion of the mission and goals of CIS and in concordance with its patient philosophy.
11. Fill out nuclear patient forms, checking for proper indications, physicians orders and checking insurance to see if pre-certification is needed. Obtain consents when necessary.
12. Bring patients to prep room, obtain current weight if the patient is for pharmacologic stress, explain the procedure to the patient, and have patient sign a consent form.
13. Obtain resting EKG, blood pressure and heart rate, get EKG signed by a physician, and obtain EKG, blood pressure and heart rate at timed intervals during exercise/stress.
14. Assist in staffing other clinics and departments when needed.
15. Create accurate and complete electronic stress test reports and enter electronic messages to other departments to assist with patient flow and document patient wait times.
