Job Summary:
The primary responsibility of this position is to rescue food from retail donors and deliver food to agency partners. Loads and unloads product. Acts as are presentation of Care and Share to our retail donors and partner agencies. Acts as a back up to the Over the Road Delivery Driver in SLV and assists in the warehouse as needed. Ensures compliance with Feeding America, the American Institute of Baking (AIB), the Department of Transportation (DOT), and other regulatory agencies.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Operates a box truck or semi-truck (as back-up) according to applicable state and federal transportation laws. Navigates inclement weather, including mountain passes, and equips trucks appropriately (i.e., tire chains).
- Maintains a positive relationship with our retail donors and partner agencies. Represents Care and Share, helps to resolve concerns, and communicates issues to the main office.
- Safely maneuvers truck (and trailer when applicable) into tight and/or small loading and unloading areas. In a timely manner, complete daily route, obeying all traffic laws and observing all safety regulations.
- Loads and unloads pallets of food, using a forklift and pallet jack. Weighs and sorts all retail donations and completes documentation using an Incoming Product Donation (IPD) form. Reviews the manifest to ensure all pallets are loaded.
- Maintains signed invoices, shipping bills of lading, and manifests; delivers documentation to the Distribution Center Manager when the delivery route is complete.
- Routinely checks oil, water, fuel, and air; reports maintenance malfunctions to the Distribution Center Manager. Documents pre- and post-trip inspections.
- Regularly monitors the refrigerator unit temperatures using both the thermostat display and temperature guns. Ensures the trailer is clean and free from pests. Follows Feeding America and AIB regulations to ensure food safety.
- Maintains extensive knowledge of DOT regulations. Follows trends and changes.
- Assists as needed with fulfilling partner agency orders and maintaining cleanliness and orderliness in the warehouse.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (Teams, Outlook).
- Able to exhibit patience with traffic, other drivers on the road, and upset partner agencies.
- Ability to deescalate and provide good customer service.
- Must have astute awareness of surroundings and make quick decisions.
- Extensive knowledge of the rules of the road.
- Must be mechanically inclined.
- Must be able to receive and maintain a forklift certification.
- Must be comfortable using various equipment including but not limited to pallet jack (electric and manual), shrink wrap machine, and power washer.
- Must be able to receive and maintain a ServSafe® Food Handler Certification.
Education and Experience:
- Previous professional driving experience preferred.
- Mountain and inclement weather driving experience preferred.
- Forklift and pallet jack experience preferred.
- Familiarity with the San Luis Valley and surrounding counties preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Periods of time driving mixed with periods of time walking, standing, loading and unloading.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. often.
Travel Requirements:
- Must have valid driver's license, reliable vehicle, and automobile insurance that meets Colorado’s minimum standards.
- Commercial Drivers’ License (CDL) Class A is required.
- Extensive travel throughout Southern Colorado is required.
